Fetterman Apologizes For Dems Who Can’t Get ‘S**t’ Together Amid Shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) delivered a blunt and emotional apology on Thursday, breaking from his party's leadership to condemn the ongoing government shutdown that has now entered its fourth week. Speaking with CNN’s Manu Raju, Fetterman admitted his party bears responsibility for a "failure" that is now leaving 42 million Americans without food assistance.

The federal government has been shuttered since late January over a deadlock regarding the expiration of Obamacare subsidies, which were originally pandemic-era tax credits. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has instructed his caucus to hold the line until the subsidies are extended, while Republicans are demanding a "clean" funding bill to reopen the government first.

"I’m apologizing that we can’t even get our s**t together and just open up our government," Fetterman said, noting that federal workers have already been forced to borrow $333 million to pay their personal bills while working without pay.
The SNAP Crisis
The most immediate casualty of the shutdown is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The USDA has warned that funding for the program—which provides a lifeline for one in eight Americans—will lapse starting this Saturday.

Fetterman, whose wife Giselle operates a local food pantry in Pennsylvania, warned that the impact will be devastating. "I will encounter people that have no SNAP benefits starting on Saturday, and I don’t have an explanation for them," he said. He emphasized that the crisis will hit children, seniors, and veterans the hardest, many of whom have already seen lines at local charities double in size.

As of February 2026, the demographics of the 42 million Americans currently at risk are as follows:
By Race: Approximately 35% of SNAP participants identify as White, 26% as Black/African American, 16% as Hispanic, and 4% as Asian.
By Age: Roughly 39% of participants are children, while 19% are elderly adults.

The Political Blame Game
Leader Schumer has accused President Trump of "manufacturing a hunger crisis" to avoid fixing healthcare. However, Republicans point out that the President cannot legally create a budget out of thin air under the Antideficiency Act. The stalemate over the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits continues to be the primary hurdle, with the GOP offering a two-month stopgap to Jan. 30 that Schumer has thus far rejected.
