‘I’m Not Better’: Sheinelle Jones Breaks Her Silence On Life After Husband Uche Ojeh’s Death — The Heartbreaking Truth Behind Her Brave Smile

Sheinelle Jones has shared the painful reality of life after the devastating loss of her husband, Uche Ojeh, admitting that despite returning to television, her grief is still overwhelming.

The Today show star opened up to People about losing Uche, who passed away in May from an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma.

“I don’t even think I understood fully what it would feel like to not have him,” she said. “It’s the life after where you really feel the loss.”Although viewers now see her back on screen, Sheinelle insisted that appearances can be misleading.

“People see me on TV and they think, ‘Oh, she’s better.’ It’s like, ‘Oh, no, no. I’m not better,’” she confessed. “Every day, it’s like swimming through mud.”

She explained that grief now lives side by side with joy.

“I’ve had to really do the work. Empathy is my superpower now, and I recognize that I hold two things: I hold my grief, and I also hold this joy,” she said.
“I said it months ago, and I’ll say it now: I am fighting for my joy.”

Jones also spoke openly about her faith, revealing that she never once imagined she would lose her husband.

“Not once did I think I was going to lose him,” she admitted. “When you’re a woman of faith, you pray for an outcome — and when it doesn’t come, you’re left asking why. I still don’t know if I have the answer, but I have peace that passes all understanding.”

She was quick to stress that faith doesn’t erase the pain.

“It doesn’t mean that it’s easier. It doesn’t mean that my grief is not excruciating,” she said.

Despite the heartbreak, there has been a glimmer of professional renewal. In December 2025, Sheinelle was announced as the replacement for Hoda Kotb on Today with Jenna & Friends, joining Jenna Bush Hager as her new co-host and “forever friend.”

Still, behind the bright studio lights, Sheinelle is navigating a grief that has forever changed her.
