Chapter 9 - The Groundbreaking Ceremony

The following morning, the old Miller farm in Oakridge was transformed.

A massive white event tent had been erected over the grassy field where the burned ruins of the old barn had once stood. The charred timbers had been cleared away, replaced by a smooth concrete pad that would serve as the foundation for the new community center.

Hundreds of Oakridge residents had gathered under the bright morning sun.

Former factory workers in flannel shirts, mothers holding babies, local shopkeepers, and dozens of children stood around the perimeter, cheering as the high school marching band played on the temporary stage.

Standing near the front of the stage were Arthur, Lily, and Emma.

Arthur wore a navy suit, looking strong and healthy. Lily wore a red coat that matched Emma’s small woolen hat. Beside them stood the Mayor of Oakridge and the Chief of Police, holding gold-painted shovels for the ceremonial dirt turning.

"Ladies and gentlemen of Oakridge!" the Mayor boomed through the speakers. "Today, we don't just dig dirt. Today, we plant the seeds of our town's rebirth! And we owe it all to Mr. Arthur Montgomery... and young Miss Lily Morgan!"

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.

Lily stood beside Arthur, looking out at the crowd. She saw the convenience store clerk who used to pour old soup in the trash; he was smiling and clapping. She saw the librarian who let her sit in the warm corner; the woman waved at her with tears in her eyes.

Lily felt a gentle tug on her coat. She looked down. Emma was pointing toward the edge of the crowd near the heavy construction equipment.

"Lily," Emma whispered, her small face confused. "Who is that man?"

Lily followed her sister's finger.

Standing behind a large yellow bulldozer fifty yards away was a tall man in a dark grey jacket and a low-brimmed cap. His right hand was tucked inside his jacket.

Lily’s eyes narrowed. Her street instincts, honed by years of hyper-vigilance, flared like an alarm bell in her mind.

The man stepped out from behind the bulldozer. He wasn't looking at the Mayor. He wasn't looking at Arthur.

He was staring directly at Lily, and his hand was bringing a heavy, black object out from beneath his coat. A gun fitted with a long silencer.

"DOWNNNN!" Lily screamed at the top of her lungs, throwing her entire small body against Arthur’s legs, knocking him off his feet onto the wooden stage just as a sharp THWIP-THWIP cut through the air.

The bullets shattered the glass podium right where Arthur’s head had been a second before.

The crowd screamed in terror, erupting into immediate, chaotic panic as people dropped to the ground or fled toward the parking area.

"SECURITY!" Arthur yelled, rolling over to cover Lily and Emma with his own body.

The shooter, seeing he had missed his primary target, aimed his weapon directly at the pile of bodies on the stage—at Lily’s exposed back.

BANG! BANG!

Two sharp gunshots echoed from the side of the stage.

The gunman dropped his weapon, collapsing onto his knees as two plainclothes security officers—stationed by Arthur following Vance's arrest—tackled him into the mud, pinning his arms behind his back.

"Clear! Area clear!" the chief security officer yelled into his radio, sprinting onto the stage. "Target disarmed! We have the shooter!"

Arthur sat up frantically, pulling Lily into his arms, his face pale with terror. "Lily! Lily, are you hit?! Talk to me!"

Lily pushed herself up, her breathing fast and shallow, her heart hammering against her ribs. She checked herself, then quickly checked Emma, who was crying loudly but unharmed beneath Arthur’s coat.

"I'm okay," Lily gasped, her voice trembling. "Emma's okay."

Arthur dragged both girls into a fiercely tight embrace, his shoulders shaking as he buried his face in Lily’s dark hair. "My God... my God..."

The security officer walked over, holding the disarmed weapon in a plastic evidence bag. "Mr. Montgomery, the shooter is one of Vance's associates. He just confessed on the spot. Julian paid him from an offshore account to hit the girl."

Arthur stood up slowly. His eyes were no longer those of a gentle father. They were filled with an ancient, dark, terrifying wrath that made even his own head of security step back a pace.

Arthur picked Lily up in his left arm, grabbed Emma’s hand with his right, and walked directly toward his lead attorney.

"Call the State Prosecutor," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a register colder than arctic ice. "Tell him I am funding the prosecution's entire legal budget. Transfer Julian to a maximum-security federal facility in Nevada today. I want him in solitary confinement for the rest of his natural life."

"Consider it done, Mr. Montgomery," the attorney replied, turning to execute the orders immediately.

Arthur turned back to the crowd, who were slowly gathering around the stage, horrified by what had happened but standing in solid, protective unity around the family.

Arthur looked at Lily. "Are you scared, sweetheart?"

May you like

Lily looked at the gunman being dragged away in handcuffs by the police. She reached into her pocket, felt the soft cotton of her handkerchief with the gold stars, and looked out at the people of Oakridge who were stepping forward to shield them.

"No," Lily said, her voice turning completely steady, completely fearless. "I'm not scared anymore, Papa. Bad things don't win here."
