Chapter 8 - The Rebuilding

Spring arrived in Philadelphia, bringing warm breezes, blooming cherry blossoms, and a fresh start.
With my corporate duties dramatically reduced, my life took on a entirely new rhythm. The Chestnut Hill estate was no longer an empty, echoing fortress—it had become a vibrant, chaotic, and loving home.
We completely renovated the house. Together with Nora, we repainted her bedroom in bright pastel yellow and filled it with books, toys, and an easel for her paintings.
I established the Rebecca Lane Foundation, an endowment of fifty million dollars dedicated to funding public libraries, providing legal aid for low-income tenants facing wrongful evictions, and supporting homeless mothers across Pennsylvania. Margaret Doyle was appointed as the head of the foundation's community outreach board, finally giving her the resources to help hundreds of children just like Nora.
One Saturday afternoon, I drove Rebecca down to South Philadelphia.
We walked down the familiar, narrow brick street where our lives had begun. The old bakery on the ground floor was still there, smelling faintly of fresh bread and cinnamon.
"It hasn't changed much," Rebecca said, wrapping her arm around my waist as we stood on the sidewalk.
"Look up," I pointed toward the second floor.
The dilapidated old windows had been replaced with beautiful dark wood framing. A fresh copper brass plaque hung beside the door: The Lane-Cole Archival Center.
Rebecca gasped, looking at me in surprise. "You bought the building?"
"I bought the whole block," I confessed with a sheepish grin. "The second-floor apartment where we used to live is being preserved exactly as it was—as a historic reading room for neighborhood kids. The rest of the building is now a free community literacy center."
Rebecca pulled my face down and kissed me deeply right there on the sidewalk, under the afternoon sun.

"You really are trying to make up for thirteen years, aren't you?" she murmured against my lips.
"I have a lifetime to make up for it," I smiled, wrapping my arms around her. "And I intend to use every single day."
