Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

For the next thirty-six hours, Jeffrey attempted to contact Madeline frantically. He called her cell phone fifty times, sent dozens of text messages alternating between cowardly apologies, desperate pleas, and furious threats.
“Madeline, please think about the business!” “If you ruin the European deal, Vanguard goes bankrupt!” “Mom is sorry! Cynthia is moving out! Just come back and let’s talk!”
Madeline ignored every single message. She allowed the panic to consume him. She knew how Jeffrey’s mind worked: he was a coward who relied on the strength of the women around him. Without Madeline managing his business and without his mother feeding his ego, he was nothing more than an arrogant empty suit.
On Thursday morning, the grand glass headquarters of Vanguard Holdings in downtown Atlanta was bustling with activity. The board members, representing major institutional investors, sat around the polished mahogany table in the top-floor boardroom.
Jeffrey sat at the head of the table, wearing a crisp Italian suit, but his bloodshot eyes and pale skin betrayed his terror. Sitting next to him was his mother, Noelle, who had insisted on attending as a minor shareholder, trying to maintain an aura of elegance despite her visibly shaking hands.
“Where is Vice President Madeline?” asked Richard Harrison, the lead board member and a major investor. “She was supposed to present the final European expansion agreement today. The London group won't sign without her approval.”
“Madeline is... unwell today,” Jeffrey lied smoothly, trying to regain control. “She suffered from severe exhaustion after her flight. However, as CEO, I have full authority to execute the contracts on her behalf. We can proceed with the vote to finalize the deal.”
Just as Jeffrey raised his pen to initiate the board vote, the double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Madeline stepped into the room. She was accompanied by Julian Thorne and two senior legal associates carrying thick leather briefcases.
The entire boardroom went silent.
“Madeline!” Jeffrey gasped, scrambling to his feet. “You... you shouldn't be here! You need rest!”
“I’m feeling remarkably well, Jeffrey,” Madeline said smoothly, stepping to the podium at the front of the room. Her presence was commanding, her demeanor radiant and utterly cold. “And I’m here to present a report that the board desperately needs to see before any vote takes place.”
Noelle stood up, her voice shrill. “Board members, this is an internal family dispute! My daughter-in-law is emotionally unstable! I request that security escort her out!”
“Sit down, Noelle,” Richard Harrison commanded sternly. “Madeline has driven eighty percent of our international growth. She has the floor.”
Madeline signaled to Julian’s associate, who connected a encrypted USB drive to the boardroom's central projection system.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the board,” Madeline began, addressing the room with absolute poise. “For the past two years, while I was building our international division in London, CEO Jeffrey Vance was engaging in gross financial misconduct, embezzlement of corporate funds, and severe moral turpitude that directly threatens the viability of this corporation.”
Jeffrey’s eyes widened in horror. “What? That's slander!”
“Is it?” Madeline pressed a button on the remote control.
The giant display screen illuminated. But instead of financial spreadsheets, it showed detailed bank statements highlighting millions of dollars transferred from Vanguard’s executive reserve account into a private shell company registered under the name of Cynthia Miller—Jeffrey’s mistress.
The board members gasped. Richard Harrison turned to glare at Jeffrey, his expression darkening instantly.
“Furthermore,” Madeline continued, her voice hardening, “Jeffrey Vance used corporate funds to maintain a private residence where systematic, horrific abuse was inflicted upon my minor child—an act condoned and facilitated by himself and his mother.”
Before Jeffrey could react, Madeline pressed another button.
The screen shifted to a video playback. It was the high-definition footage from the mansion’s smart camera system: Noelle striking four-year-old Liam, Cynthia throwing food at him on the floor, and Jeffrey standing by, laughing while his son wept in a dark corner.
The boardroom exploded into absolute chaos.
Several female board members covered their mouths in horror. Men gasped in disgust. Richard Harrison slammed his fist onto the table, his face flushed with rage.
“You absolute monster!” Harrison roared at Jeffrey.
Jeffrey sank into his chair, sweating profusely, looking at his mother, who had turned gray with shock. “No... no, it's not what it looks like! It was a discipline issue!”
“The police have already been notified,” Madeline said, her voice echoing over the uproar. “And as the fifty-one percent majority shareholder of Vanguard Holdings, I hereby call an emergency motion to immediately terminate Jeffrey Vance as CEO, strip him of all executive powers, and initiate formal civil litigation for embezzlement.”
“I second the motion!” Harrison shouted immediately.
“I third it!” another board member chimed in.

Madeline looked down at Jeffrey, who was trembling uncontrollably in his leather chair.
“Your reign is over, Jeffrey,” she whispered. “And this is only the beginning.”
