Chapter 7 - The Healing Process

Spring drifted into the sweltering heat of a Texas summer.

The transformation of the Whitmore household wasn't a fairy tale that happened overnight; it was built day by brick-and-mortar day. There were still difficult conversations, quiet tears, and moments where Claire would catch Grant staring into space, wrestling with the ghost of the father he used to be.

But every afternoon at 4:00 PM sharp, Grant closed his laptop, walked out to the backyard sandbox, and sat in the dirt with Mason, Maddox, Liam, and Luke.

He learned their individual laughs. He learned which one preferred peanut butter without jelly, which one was terrified of thunderstorms, and which one could throw a baseball farther than the others.

One evening in late July, after the boys had finally been tucked into bed, Grant and Claire sat together on the front porch swing. The cicadas buzzed in the towering oak trees, and the warm evening breeze carried the scent of blooming jasmine from the garden.

Claire rested her head gently against Grant’s shoulder, her fingers intertwined with his.

“The legal paperwork for the final reconciliation was finalized by Marcus today,” Claire murmured quietly. “The divorce petition is officially dismissed.”

Grant wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her closer, pressing a soft kiss into her hair.

“I know,” Grant said softly. “Marcus sent me a copy. I signed the master deed transfer to your name this morning. Not because I’m trying to make amends, but because this house... this family... is the only real asset I’ve ever owned.”

Claire turned her face upward, looking at him in the dim porch light. Her grey eyes shone with a quiet, fierce devotion.

“You really changed, didn't you, Grant?”

“I didn't change, Claire,” Grant whispered, placing his other hand gently against her cheek. “I just finally woke up.”
