Chapter 3 - THE BATTLE FOR THE NURSERY

Two days after the public collapse of Daniel Vale, the quiet halls of the hospital’s pediatric intensive care wing were warm and peaceful.
Elena sat in a plush armchair inside the private suite she had secured. In her arms, she held her eldest daughter, Victoria, while the two younger triplets—Alexander and Sophia—slept soundly in twin warming cribs beside her. The baby girl was gaining weight, her tiny face acquiring a healthy pink glow.
The door opened softly, and Arthur Vance stepped in, carrying a tablet and a stack of legal filings.
"How are our future CEOs?" Arthur asked with a warm, grandfatherly smile.
"Growing stronger every hour," Elena said, placing a gentle kiss on Victoria’s soft forehead. "What is the update from the defense team?"
Arthur’s smile faded into a serious expression. "Daniel’s legal counsel managed to post his bail this morning. His personal funds are frozen, but his mother, Evelyn Vale, put up her mansion in the suburbs as collateral."
Elena didn't flinch. "I expected Evelyn to intervene. She has spent thirty years convincing herself that her son can do no wrong."
"Evelyn’s attorney filed an emergency petition with the family court two hours ago," Arthur warned. "They are seeking joint custody of the triplets, claiming that your current physical state and 'emotional distress' render you unfit to care for them alone. They also hinted at demanding a paternity test, claiming you orchestrated this entire situation to hide an affair."
A low, dangerous chuckle escaped Elena’s lips. "A paternity test? Daniel didn't even visit the nursery when they were born. He was too busy buying emeralds for Celeste."
"Evelyn is desperate, Elena," Arthur said. "She knows that if Daniel loses all connection to the children, he loses his last faint claim to any discretionary disbursements from your grandfather’s trust. They are using the babies as a bargaining chip to force you to drop the criminal charges."
Elena handed Victoria carefully to the attending nurse, then stood up from her chair. She walked over to the tall glass window overlooking the hospital courtyard. Down below, she spotted a silver Mercedes parked near the emergency entrance. Standing beside it was Evelyn Vale—dressed in an extravagant fur coat, surrounded by two high-priced family law attorneys.
"Call Judge Harrison," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave into pure velvet steel. "The emergency custody hearing is scheduled for tomorrow at noon, correct?"
"Yes," Arthur confirmed.
"Bring Dr. Patel, the full medical log from the night of my labor, the phone records showing the fifty-four unanswered calls to Daniel’s mobile, and the security footage from the gala where he was photographed drinking champagne while my blood pressure was seventy over forty."
"I already have them compiled," Arthur smirked. "And what about Evelyn’s claims regarding your mental stability?"
Elena turned around, looking at her three sleeping babies. "Evelyn thinks she is going to play the role of the grieving, concerned grandmother. Let her come to court. It’s time the public sees what kind of mother raised a monster like Daniel."
The next morning at the County Family Court, the hallway was crammed with news vans. The scandal had escalated from a corporate takeover to a high-stakes, ruthless custody battle involving one of the wealthiest families in the region.
Evelyn Vale sat on the velvet bench outside courtroom 402, clutching a designer handbag, her face set in a permanent sneer. When Elena walked down the hall—dressed in a crisp ivory coat, flanked by Arthur Vance and Dr. Patel—Evelyn stood up immediately, stepping into her path.
"You ungrateful little creature," Evelyn hissed, her voice trembling with aristocratic fury. "My son gave you a life! He brought you out of your grandfather's boring accounting office and put you in a penthouse! And this is how you repay him? Destroying his career and keeping his blood from him?!"
Elena stopped two inches from Evelyn’s face. She didn't raise her voice, but the sheer, icy intensity in her eyes made the older woman take an involuntary half-step back.
"Your son left me to bleed out on an operating table so he could cut a birthday cake with his mistress, Evelyn," Elena said, each word dripping with absolute poison. "He is not a father. He is a parasite. And if you attempt to use my children to save his bank account, I will make sure the court reviews your personal tax returns next."
Evelyn’s face turned white. "You wouldn't dare..."
"Try me," Elena whispered.

The courtroom doors opened, and the bailiff called their names.
"Vale versus Vale. The Honorable Judge Harrison presiding."
