Chapter 9 - The Clearing of the Air

The public fallout was spectacular. When the District Attorney released the details of the indictment, along with the audio recordings, the very high-society friends who had championed Gertrude and Prudence turned on them like a pack of starving wolves.

Prudence's boutique was boycotted and closed down within forty-eight hours. The local media outlets that had painted me as an abusive monster ran front-page apologies, detailing the heroic survival of Sarah Vance and the horrific betrayal she had suffered at the hands of her in-laws.

But inside the gates of the mansion, we didn't care about the news. We turned off the televisions. We blocked the phone numbers.

We spent the next six months transforming the house. The grand, sterile marble rooms were filled with soft rugs, colorful paintings, and bookshelves stacked with children's literature. The old service kitchen at the back of the house was completely torn down; in its place, we built a beautiful, sunlit greenhouse where Sarah could grow her favorite orchids.

One morning, while helping Jamie build a massive fort out of cardboard boxes in the living room, he looked up at me with his bright, clear eyes.

"Dad?" he asked softly.

"Yeah, buddy?"

"Are we always going to live here?"

I pulled him into my lap, burying my face in his hair, which now smelled of clean baby shampoo and fresh air. "Always, Jamie. Nobody is ever going to push you out of this house again. This is your home."

He smiled, a full, radiant smile that held no more fear, and threw his arms around my neck. "I love you, Dad."

"I love you too, son."
