Chapter 3 - The Hospital Ward

The private wing of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was quiet when I arrived at 1:00 a.m.

My mother had been admitted to the trauma unit for a full forensic medical evaluation. Dr. Aris Thorne—Judge Thorne’s daughter and one of the top geriatric trauma specialists in the state—was waiting for me outside Room 412.

“Elena,” Dr. Thorne said gently, stepping forward to greet me with a quick, supportive touch on my arm. “She’s resting now. We’ve given her a mild sedative and managed her pain.”

“How bad is it, Aris?” I asked, leaning against the cold corridor wall, feeling the sheer exhaustion of the night finally catching up to my muscles.

Dr. Thorne opened a thick digital chart on her tablet. “The physical evidence is overwhelming. She has three fractured ribs on her left side that are roughly two weeks old—consistent with direct blunt force trauma. Her wrist lacerations show clear signs of recurring friction burns, meaning she was tied down multiple times over a prolonged period. Additionally, her toxicology report showed dangerously elevated levels of synthetic sedatives.”

My breath hitched. “Sedatives?”

“Over-the-counter anti-anxiety medications mixed with heavy sleeping aids,” Dr. Thorne explained, her expression darkening. “They were heavy-dosing her tea to keep her lethargic during the day so she wouldn't try to leave the house or answer the door when neighbors came by. It’s a miracle she didn't suffer a fatal cardiac event.”

I closed my eyes for three seconds, letting the horror of the medical report burn itself into my memory. Every detail, every fractured bone, every chemical toxin would become a weapon in the courtroom.

“I need a full, certified forensic medical report delivered to my office by 8:00 a.m.,” I said, opening my eyes. “Including high-resolution thermal imaging of the rib fractures to establish the timeline of the abuse.”

“It’s already being compiled,” Dr. Thorne said. “Elena... she asked for you before she fell asleep. She’s terrified that Chloe’s father is going to use his influence to discharge her.”

“Arthur Sterling doesn't have enough money in the world to touch her in this hospital,” I said coldly. “I’ve posted two armed state investigators outside her door. No one enters this room without my written authorization.”

I pushed open the door to Room 412 and stepped inside.

The room was soft and quiet, illuminated only by the faint green glow of the heart monitor. My mother lay in the center of the large hospital bed, looking impossibly small beneath the white blankets. Her arms were resting outside the sheets, wrapped in thick white gauze bandages to protect her damaged skin.

I pulled a vinyl chair close to the bed and sat down, carefully taking her fingers in mine.

She stirred slightly, her eyelids fluttering open. “Elena?”

“I’m right here, Mom,” I whispered, leaning in close.

“Julian...” she breathed, her eyes darting toward the window. “Did he... did he tell them I was lying?”

“It doesn't matter what he told them,” I said gently, smoothing a stray lock of grey hair from her forehead. “The doctors found the injuries. The police found the ropes, the checks, and the cameras. Nobody is ever going to doubt your word again.”

Tears overflowed her eyes, trailing down her wrinkled cheeks, but her breathing remained steady. “I thought... I thought I was going to die in that coat, Elena. I thought if I took it off, they would see how weak I was and put me away.”

“The coat is gone, Mom,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “And so are they. You are safe. I’m taking leave from the bureau. I’m staying right here until every single piece of your life is restored.”

She squeezed my fingers with surprising strength, her small hand warm against mine, and within minutes, the soft, rhythmic hum of the monitor indicated she had drifted back into a peaceful sleep.

At 3:30 a.m., my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from Evelyn Vance, my senior investigative analyst at the Attorney General’s office:

Elena. We just hit a massive hit on the subpoenaed bank records. Chloe Sterling-Vance didn't just drain your mother’s accounts. She transferred $1.2 million into an offshore shell entity registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Sterling Holdings LLC'. Arthur Sterling’s signature is on the wire transfer authorization.

I stared at the glowing screen, a dark, dangerous smile spreading across my face.

Julian and Chloe weren't acting alone. Arthur Sterling—the powerful, politically connected managing partner of the city’s top corporate law firm—was actively laundering my mother’s stolen estate through his firm’s offshore accounts.

They thought they were dealing with an isolated domestic dispute.

They had no idea they had just handed me the key to dismantle their entire criminal enterprise.
