Chapter 5 - The Master of the House

"Elena?" Gregory Ashcroft’s voice echoed off the damp brick walls, laced with disbelief and poisonous disgust. "You little parasite... you brought Adrien Dragamir to my house?"
Adrien moved instantly, shoving Elena behind a concrete pillar just as a deafening shotgun blast tore through the air, showering them with brick dust and concrete splinters.
"Dragamir!" Gregory screamed from the catwalk, pumping another shell into the chamber. "You think you can play the hero?! You’re a gangster! A mobster! You run illegal docks and smuggle contraband! You have no moral high ground here!"
Adrien stepped out from behind the pillar, his expression completely calm, his weapon steady in his right hand.
"You're right, Gregory," Adrien said, his voice terrifyingly quiet despite the roaring flames of the incinerator. "I am a gangster. I know what I am, and I don't pretend to be a saint. I don't run children's charities to cover my sins. I don't sell helpless girls and call it philanthropy."
"They were nothing!" Gregory raged, his hands shaking as he aimed the shotgun down. "Street rats! Orphans! Unwanted trash! I gave them clothes! I gave them purpose! Without me, they would have died in gutters!"
"They were children!" Elena screamed, stepping out from behind the pillar, holding the master ledger tightly against her chest. "You burned my hands! You locked us in the dark! You broke my fingers and told me I was worthless!"
Gregory glared down at her, his eyes cold with pure malice. "I should have put you in the furnace fourteen years ago, Elena. You were always the most stubborn piece of trash in the ward."
"She isn't trash," Adrien said softly.
A single shot rang out.
Adrien’s bullet struck Gregory’s shoulder with surgical precision. The shotgun dropped from Gregory’s hands, clattering over the railing and plunging into the roaring flames of the incinerator below.
Gregory fell to his knees on the catwalk, clutching his bleeding arm, screaming in pain.
From outside, the thunderous sound of heavy doors being kicked open echoed through the building, followed by the shouts of Dragamir’s tactical operatives securing the upper floors.
"Loading bay secured!" Marcus’s voice boomed through Adrien’s earpiece. "Boss, we have eleven teenagers safe in our transport. All perimeter guards neutralized. Federal agents are ten minutes out!"
Adrien walked slowly up the metal stairs to the catwalk, his polished boots clicking against the steel grates. He stood over Gregory Ashcroft, looking down at the bleeding man with absolute indifference.
"You're not going to kill me," Gregory gasped, sweating profusely, staring up at the criminal boss. "You kill me, and my foundation lawyers will bury you in civil suits! The media will call this a syndicate hit!"
Adrien leaned down, grabbing Gregory by his lapels, pulling him up until their faces were inches apart.
"I’m not going to kill you, Gregory," Adrien whispered, his eyes dark as midnight. "Death is too quick. Death doesn't give you time to think about twenty-four years of cold basements."
May you like
Adrien dragged him to the railing, forcing him to look down at Elena standing below, holding the master ledger.
"You are going to spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal facility," Adrien promised. "Your assets will be seized. Your name will become a curse across this country. And every morning, when you wake up in your six-by-eight cell, you will remember that the girl who cleaned your floors was the one who broke your kingdom."
