Chapter 9 - The Foundation of Love

On a crisp, clear evening a week before Christmas, the historic Mercer estate in Oakridge was glowing with silver and gold decorations.

In the grand living room, a massive twelve-foot Douglas fir tree stood beside the roaring stone fireplace, decorated with hundreds of twinkling lights and hand-carved wooden ornaments.

Five-year-old Lily and seven-year-old Maya were sitting on the plush rug near the tree, wearing matching flannel pajamas, laughing hysterically as they placed colorful bows onto the head of David’s golden retriever, Duke.

I stood near the dining room doorway, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater, holding a cup of hot cocoa, watching the children play.

David stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms gently around my waist, resting his chin lightly on my shoulder. His warmth enveloped me like a soft, safe blanket.

“What are you thinking about, CEO Vane?” David whispered playfully against my ear, his deep voice sending a warm shiver down my spine.

I leaned back against his solid chest, smiling as I watched Lily place a giant red bow on Maya’s head.

“I’m thinking that one year ago, I was sitting in my tiny apartment, dreading the holiday, wondering if I would ever feel like I belonged anywhere,” I murmured softly. “And tonight... I feel like I’m standing right in the center of my true life.”

David turned me gently in his arms so I was facing him. His bright blue eyes were filled with an intense, unshakeable devotion that made my breath catch in my throat.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

My heart began to hammer against my ribs.

“Claire,” David said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. “Two years ago, when my wife passed away, I thought my heart was closed forever. I thought my job was just to protect Maya and do my work. But then you walked into my office seven years ago with a heavy secret and the bravest heart I’ve ever seen.”

He opened the box. Inside rested a breathtaking vintage ring—a glowing cushion-cut sapphire set in a halo of brilliant diamonds.

“You built an empire with your brilliance,” David continued, looking straight into my eyes. “You protected your daughter with your fierce courage. And you transformed my home and my daughter’s life with your grace. Claire Vane, will you marry me and let me spend the rest of my life protecting you?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over my eyelashes, glistening in the firelight.

From across the room, Lily and Maya stopped playing, jumping up and gasping in utter delight.

“Say yes, Mommy! Say yes!” Lily squealed, clapping her tiny hands together.

“Please say yes, Claire!” Maya cheered, hugging Lily tightly.

I looked down at the ring, then up into David’s eyes, a radiant, tearful smile illuminating my face.

“Yes, David,” I whispered, stepping into his arms. “A thousand times, yes.”

David slipped the ring onto my finger, pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our future, while the girls cheered and circled around us with the dog, their joyful laughter echoing through the warm, glowing house.
