CHAPTER 3 — The House That Watches You Back

The gates closed behind the Rolls-Royce with a sound that felt less like metal locking—

and more like a decision being made for her.

Maya pressed her hand against the tinted window as the city disappeared.

Seattle’s skyline faded into rain, then trees, then darkness.

“Where are we going?” she asked quietly.

Adrien didn’t look at her.

“Somewhere the cameras don’t belong.”

“That doesn’t answer anything.”

“It answers enough.”

That was all he gave her.

And somehow, it was worse than silence.

1 — Arrival at Blackwood Estate

They drove for nearly an hour outside the city.

No signs.

No streetlights.

Just forest.

Then—

a wall appeared.

Not a fence.

A wall.

Black stone, rising too high to see the top.

The car slowed as massive iron gates opened automatically.

Maya leaned forward.

“…Is this a mansion or a prison?”

Adrien finally glanced at her.

“Depends who you are.”

That answer made her stomach tighten.

The car passed through.

And the world changed again.

The estate was not a home.

It was a system disguised as luxury.

Glass buildings connected by silent walkways.

Security positioned in places no visitor would notice—but every visitor would feel.

People moved in coordinated silence.

No laughter.

No noise.

Only purpose.

Maya stepped out of the car slowly.

The air felt different.

Controlled.

Like even oxygen was monitored here.

A woman in a black suit approached immediately.

“Sir Blackwood,” she said, bowing slightly.

Then she looked at Maya.

A flicker.

Confusion.

Disapproval.

“…Is this her?”

Adrien answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

The woman didn’t hide her reaction.

“That’s… unexpected.”

Maya frowned. “I’m standing right here.”

The woman ignored her.

Adrien stepped forward slightly.

“Where is she?”

The woman’s expression tightened.

“Recovery wing. She woke up again.”

A pause.

“She’s asking for you.”

Adrien’s jaw shifted slightly.

For the first time since Maya met him—

something unguarded passed through his face.

Not weakness.

Responsibility.

2 — The Sister Who Remembers Wrong

The recovery room was too white.

Too clean.

Too quiet.

A girl lay in the bed.

Lily.

The same girl from the alley.

But now—

she didn’t look dying.

She looked guarded.

Awake in a way that wasn’t natural.

Her eyes opened when Adrien entered.

“Maya?” she whispered immediately.

Maya froze. “She knows my name?”

Adrien didn’t answer.

Lily tried to sit up.

“Don’t trust the board,” she said quickly.

A nurse stepped forward. “Miss, please—”

“No!” Lily snapped suddenly.

The monitors beeped faster.

Her hands trembled.

“Someone in the boardroom tried to shut me up before the attack,” she said urgently. “I remember it now.”

Adrien stepped closer. “Who?”

Lily hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your uncle.”

Silence.

Even the machines seemed to pause.

Maya looked between them.

“…Uncle?” she repeated.

Adrien didn’t move.

But the temperature in the room dropped.

“That’s impossible,” he said quietly.

Lily shook her head.

“I saw his face before I was pushed into the alley.”

A beat.

“He smiled when it happened.”

3 — The First Crack in the Empire

That night, Adrien called an emergency meeting.

Maya was not invited.

But she went anyway.

Because no one in that house had explained anything to her.

She stood outside the glass conference room.

Watching through reflections.

Inside:

men in suits.

women with tablets.

maps.

numbers.

power.

Adrien stood at the head of the table.

And for the first time—

he didn’t look like someone who controlled the city.

He looked like someone trying not to lose it.

“We have a breach,” he said.

A man on the left spoke.

“That’s impossible. Internal security is—”

“It was internal,” Adrien cut in.

Silence.

Maya leaned closer to the glass.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Like she didn’t belong in this world.

Adrien continued:

“Someone inside this room authorized the attempt on Lily Blackwood’s life.”

Gasps.

Denials.

Immediate tension.

A woman stood.

“That accusation is reckless.”

Adrien’s eyes lifted slightly.

“It’s not an accusation.”

A pause.

“It’s a fact.”

The room fell quiet.

And then—

he placed a folder on the table.

Opened it.

Inside were access logs.

Signatures.

Encrypted transfers.

One name highlighted in red.

Maya couldn’t see it clearly—

until he turned the page slightly.

And her blood ran cold.

Because the name wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone she had seen earlier that day.

The woman who first greeted her.

The one who said:

“That’s… unexpected.”

4 — The Truth About Maya

The meeting ended abruptly.

Not with resolution.

With evacuation orders.

And silence that felt like a warning.

Maya backed away from the glass just as the doors opened behind her.

Adrien stepped out.

He saw her immediately.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.

Maya crossed her arms. “You should’ve started with ‘you’re in danger,’ not ‘you shouldn’t be here.’”

A pause.

Then he said:

“You’re always in danger here.”

That landed heavier than expected.

Maya frowned. “Why am I even here, Adrien?”

He studied her for a long moment.

Then said quietly:

“Because you were in Lily’s file.”

Maya blinked. “What does that even mean?”

Adrien stepped closer.

“Your name was attached to her medical extraction report.”

Silence.

“That alley,” he continued, “was not random.”

Maya’s voice dropped. “So you’re saying I was… placed there?”

Adrien didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“I’m saying someone ensured you would be.”

5 — The First Attempt

A sound cut through the corridor.

Glass breaking.

Then alarms.

Then darkness.

Emergency lights activated instantly.

Red.

Flashing.

Warning.

Adrien moved fast.

“Stay behind me,” he ordered.

Maya didn’t hesitate this time.

Too many things were already breaking to pretend she had control.

They moved through the hallway.

Security rushed past them.

Then—

gunfire.

Not outside.

Inside.

Maya grabbed Adrien’s sleeve instinctively.

“Who is shooting?!”

Adrien didn’t look back.

“Someone who knows you’re here.”

“That doesn’t answer anything!”

“It answers everything.”

They turned a corner—

and two armed men appeared ahead.

Not Blackwood security.

Different insignia.

Adrien reacted instantly.

One shot.

One movement.

Both attackers down.

Maya froze.

“…You just—”

“We don’t have time,” he interrupted sharply.

He grabbed her wrist.

For the first time—

his grip wasn’t controlled.

It was urgent.

Human.

They ran.

6 — The Basement Revelation

They reached a secured elevator.

Adrien slammed his hand on the access panel.

It opened instantly.

Maya stumbled inside.

The doors closed.

Silence returned.

Except for their breathing.

Maya looked at him.

“You’re not just being targeted,” she said slowly.

Adrien didn’t respond.

“You’re at war,” she continued.

A pause.

Then he said:

“I’ve been at war since I was born.”

The elevator descended.

Deeper.

Far deeper than any residential structure should allow.

Maya frowned. “Where does this go?”

Adrien finally looked at her.

“To the part of my empire no one upstairs knows exists.”

The elevator stopped.

Doors opened.

And Maya froze.

Because the room wasn’t a basement.

It was a command center.

Screens.

Maps.

Global data streams.

Names she recognized from news headlines—

all connected to one system.

Adrien stepped out.

“This is where the Blackwood Group actually lives,” he said quietly.

Maya whispered:

“…This is not a business.”

Adrien nodded once.

“No.”

A pause.

“It’s a balance of power.”

He turned to her.

“And you just became a variable no one accounted for.”

Final Twist of the Chapter

A screen flickered.

Incoming transmission.

Unknown source.

A voice came through speakers.

Calm.

Familiar.

And horrifyingly close.

“Adrien.”

Adrien stiffened slightly.

Maya looked at him. “Who is that?”

The voice continued:

“You’ve brought her into the core.”

A pause.

“She’s exactly where we need her.”

Maya’s blood ran cold.

Adrien stepped forward.

“…Show yourself.”

A soft laugh echoed through the system.

Then the screen lit up.

And Maya saw the face.

The woman from the meeting.

Smiling.

But no longer human.

Now revealed as something else entirely.

A strategist.

A predator.

And she said:

“Hello, Maya.”

May you like

“You were never the rescue.”

“You were the trigger.”
