Chapter 10 - The Wrong Number That Got It Right

That evening, after Sophie had finally fallen asleep in her crib, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest, Claire sat at her kitchen table with a cup of chamomile tea.

The apartment was quiet, but it was no longer the heavy, suffocating silence of poverty and fear. It was the peaceful, humming quiet of a home filled with security, love, and hope.

Her phone chimed on the table.

It was a notification from her banking app.

She opened it. The balance flashed green across the screen: a healthy, stable sum that ensured Sophie would never go hungry, never lack healthcare, and never have to worry about the dark days of the past.

Claire opened her messaging app, scrolling up through the history to find the very first conversation she had ever had with Ethan.

Can I borrow $70 for baby formula? I get paid Thursday and I swear I’ll return it.

She smiled, her eyes glistening with quiet tears of gratitude.

The wrong number had not been a mistake at all. It had been the precise, miraculous moment the universe decided to catch her when she fell.

Ethan walked into the kitchen, wearing a comfortable grey sweatshirt and sweatpants, holding two mugs of coffee. He set one down in front of Claire and pulled out the chair next to hers, sitting close enough that their shoulders touched.

“What are you looking at?” he asked softly, glancing at her phone screen.

“Just reminiscing,” Claire said, leaning her head against his shoulder. “About how I almost didn't press send.”

May you like

Ethan slipped his hand into hers, his fingers interlocking naturally with hers. “I’m glad you did.”

“Me too,” Claire whispered, looking out the kitchen window at the quiet city lights glowing in the distance. “Me too.”
