Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Bite

Despite being incarcerated in the high-security wing of the county detention center, Eleanor Vale refused to go down without a bloody fight.

Three days after the press conference, Eleanor’s high-priced legal team—led by Julian Vance (no relation), the most ruthless defense attorney in the state—filed a series of aggressive counter-lawsuits.

They filed for an emergency motion claiming that Claire was mentally unstable, alleging that her two-year absence was a voluntary abandonment of her family caused by severe post-partum psychosis. They presented forged psychological evaluations signed by a dirty doctor who had been on Eleanor’s payroll.

Even worse, Julian Vance filed an emergency motion demanding full temporary custody of baby Lily, claiming that both Claire and I were unfit parents due to the ongoing criminal circus.

I sat in Marcus Bell’s corner office, looking at the court filing with absolute disgust.

“She’s trying to drag this through the family court system to create noise,” Marcus analyzed, tapping his pen on the desk. “Julian Vance knows that if he can get a family court judge to grant an independent custody evaluation for Lily, it gives them leverage to negotiate a plea deal on the criminal kidnapping charges.”

“They’re using my daughter as a bargaining chip,” I said, my blood boiling.

“Exactly,” Marcus said. “The emergency custody hearing is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon before Judge Harold Vance—a judge who, unfortunately, received substantial campaign contributions from Eleanor’s charitable foundation six years ago.”

“Then we don't just defend,” I said, standing up from my chair and pacing toward the window. “We strike at the foundation of their entire defense.”

I called my private investigator, a former federal agent named Sam Thorne, who had been digging into Eleanor’s dirty financial network for forty-eight hours.

“Sam,” I said into the phone. “Did you find the doctor?”

“Dr. Arthur Vance,” Sam’s raspy voice answered over the line. “The psychiatrist who signed Claire’s false mental competency reports for Eleanor. He just landed at JFK airport. He was trying to catch a flight to Zurich.”

“Do you have him?”

“My guys picked him up at the gate with two state troopers,” Sam chuckled grimly. “He folded in five minutes, Daniel. He gave us three years of encrypted emails from Eleanor detailing every single payment she made to him to forge those psychiatric papers.”

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, cold breath.

“Bring those emails directly to the courthouse tomorrow,” I ordered. “It’s time to end Julian Vance’s little circus before it even starts.”
