Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

Not all battles are won in a single evening.

In late September, a disgruntled former investor, allied with Rebecca—Miles's former assistant who had been fired—attempted to leak a sensationalized story to a tabloid magazine, claiming that Claire had used "paternity blackmail" to hijack the Harrington empire.

The tabloid published a teaser online, complete with blurry photos of Claire leaving her old apartment building on Perry Street.

Miles received the legal notification at 6:00 AM on a Tuesday.

Instead of hiding behind his public relations firm, Miles took a completely unprecedented approach. He didn't issue a cease-and-desist letter.

Instead, he booked an exclusive, live prime-time television interview with national news anchor Sarah Eldridge.

That evening, millions of viewers tuned in to watch Miles Harrington sit in his penthouse living room, dressed casually in a sweater, with Claire sitting comfortably by his side.

"Miles," the interviewer began, leaning forward. "There have been rumors circulating online today regarding the timing of your marriage and the birth of your twins. People are asking why your children were hidden for their first seventeen months."

Miles looked directly into the camera lens, his expression calm, powerful, and utterly unapologetic.

"My children weren't hidden, Sarah," Miles said clearly. "I was blind. Two years ago, I was a man who believed that building wealth was the ultimate expression of success. I allowed my career to consume my humanity. When Claire tried to reach me, my former staff shielded me because I had created a corporate culture that valued profit over people."

Miles reached over and took Claire’s hand, lacing his fingers through hers.

"Claire didn't blackmail me. She protected our children from a father who wasn't ready to be what they needed. For seventeen months, she raised two magnificent human beings completely alone, showing a level of courage and grace that I could only dream of. Finding them on Fifth Avenue last New Year's Eve wasn't a scandal, Sarah. It was the moment my life actually began."

The live broadcast shattered viewership records.

The tabloid immediately retracted the story, issuing a public apology, while online sentiment swung overwhelmingly in support of the Harrington family.

Sitting in her living room miles away, Evelyn Harrington watched the broadcast on her television, wiping a single tear from her eye. For the first time, she truly respected the daughter-in-law she had once dismissed as an outsider.
