Chapter 6 - The Iron Cage

By 8:00 PM, the heavy rain had returned, sweeping across the dark waters of Lake Como and battering the high stained-glass windows of Villa Moretti.

Before leaving for the strike on Venice, Alessandro called a meeting of the twelve crime families in the grand courtyard.

The lords had been moved from the ballroom to the covered marble terrace overlooking the gardens. They stood surrounded by fifty fully armed Moretti guards, their faces anxious, their hands twitching with nervous energy as the sound of idling armored SUVs echoed from the front driveway.

Alessandro walked out onto the terrace, wearing a long black tactical coat over heavy body armor.

Beside him stood Marco, holding a silver tray covered by a velvet cloth.

“Gentlemen,” Alessandro addressed the gathered dons, his voice cutting through the sound of the rain. “For twenty-four hours, you have wondered why you were detained inside my home.”

Don Ricci stepped forward, his hand trembling on his cane. “Alessandro, this is unprecedented! We are the ruling council of the North! You cannot hold us hostage!”

“I am not holding you hostage, Don Ricci,” Alessandro said calmly. “I am protecting you from a purge.”

Alessandro stepped up to the velvet-covered tray and pulled the cloth back.

On the silver tray lay three hard drives containing the decrypted evidence, alongside three printed copies of the financial ledgers detailing every bribe, every assassination contract, and every betrayal executed by Matteo Conti and Domenico Romano over the past decade.

“Don Domenico Romano and his daughter have been transferred to our deep facility in Turin,” Alessandro announced to the shocked crowd. “They will spend the remainder of their short lives answering questions for my intelligence officers.”

He looked across the faces of the remaining ten crime bosses.

“Matteo Conti of Venice has sold out Northern Italy to foreign syndicates,” Alessandro declared. “He planned to murder me, dismantle the Moretti network, and turn your territories into vassal states for his overseas partners. Tonight, I am going to Venice to collect his head.”

A heavy murmur ran through the crime lords. Some looked terrified; others looked at the printed ledgers with growing rage as they recognized their own lost profits listed in Conti’s offshore accounts.

Don Ricci stepped up to the table, adjusting his spectacles, scanning the financial documents. His old eyes flared with sudden, lethal anger.

“Conti stole eight million euros from my family’s transport trust in 2018,” Ricci hissed, his knuckles turning white on his cane. He looked up at Alessandro. “Kill him, Alessandro. Clean the house.”

“The house will be cleaned tonight,” Alessandro promised. He turned his gaze toward the far corner of the terrace where I stood with Emma, guarded by Dr. Emil and four heavy enforcers.

Alessandro walked away from the crime lords and approached us.

He knelt down in front of Emma, who was wearing a soft yellow raincoat Dr. Emil had found for her. In her arms, she held Barnaby the rabbit—now neatly stitched back together by Dr. Emil after the flash drive had been safely removed.

“I have to go away for a little while, Emma,” Alessandro said softly, his voice dropping into that quiet, human register he reserved only for her.

Emma looked at him with her large, dark eyes. “Are you going to fight the bad men?”

Alessandro paused, a faint, rueful smile touching the corner of his lips. “Yes, little one. I am.”

Emma reached into her yellow raincoat pocket and pulled out a small, shiny blue plastic button that had fallen off her sweater earlier. She pressed it into Alessandro’s large, scarred palm.

“Take this,” she whispered fiercely. “Mr. Bunny says it brings good luck when you’re scared.”

Alessandro stared at the cheap plastic button sitting in his hand. For a man who owned millions in gold, diamonds, and real estate, he held that button as if it were the most valuable treasure in Europe.

He closed his fingers tightly over it and slipped it into the breast pocket of his body armor, directly over his heart.

“Thank you, Emma,” he murmured. He stood up, turning his slate-gray eyes to me.

“Clara,” he said, his gaze intense, heavy with unspoken feelings that had grown between us in less than forty-eight hours. “The villa is fully locked down. Marco’s second-in-command has fifty men on the perimeter. You and Emma are safe here.”

“Alessandro,” I reached out impulsively, my hand brushing against the cold leather of his tactical sleeve. “Be careful. Venice is his stronghold.”

Alessandro looked down at my hand on his arm, then raised his eyes to meet mine.

“I have spent ten years looking for justice for my father, Clara,” he said softly. “Now I have a reason to come back alive.”

He turned, pulled his tactical collar up against the rain, and walked down the marble steps toward the waiting convoy of black armored SUVs.
