Chapter 9 - Justice Served

The fallout from the scandal shook the New York corporate world to its core. The arrest of Arthur Pendelton and Vivien Cole made the front pages of every financial and society newspaper in the country. The wire fraud, corporate espionage, and attempted murder charges were airtight, backed by the comprehensive evidence file compiled by Nathaniel and Marcus.

Arthur Pendelton, desperate to save himself from a maximum sentence, turned state's evidence against Vivien, confirming the entire plot to incapacitate Margaret and force the corporate merger with Apex Holdings.

Vivien Cole, facing twenty-five years in a maximum-security facility without the possibility of parole for attempted first-degree murder, eventually pled guilty to minimize her sentence to fifteen years. Her family's name was completely ruined, their remaining assets seized to pay for legal fees and restitution.

Three weeks after the dramatic confrontation in the boardroom, the atmosphere at the Whitmore estate had transformed completely. The oppressive gloom had lifted, replaced by a sense of hard-won peace.

Margaret Whitmore was back home. She sat in a comfortable armchair in the sunlit conservatory, a thick wool blanket over her lap, her broken wrist healing nicely. She was sipping her favorite tea, her sharp eyes scanning the gardens outside where the first signs of early spring were beginning to show.

Nathaniel entered, carrying a stack of corporate documents. He looked lighter than he had in years; the tension in his shoulders had finally dissolved.

"The board approved the new security protocols this morning, Mother," Nathaniel said, sitting across from him. "Pendelton’s shares have been liquidated and bought back by the family trust. We now hold a 65% absolute majority. No one can touch this company again."

Margaret nodded, taking a slow sip of her tea. "Good. A company is like a fortress, Nathaniel. It’s only as strong as the people inside the walls. I told you that woman was a snake."

"You did," Nathaniel admitted, a genuine smile breaking across his face. "And I should have listened sooner."

"Well, you figured it out when it counted," Margaret said, her tone softening with rare, genuine pride. She looked at him closely. "And what about the girl? The housekeeper’s daughter?"

"Rosa and Lily are staying in the city penthouse permanently," Nathaniel said. "I’ve established a fully funded educational trust for Lily. She can go to any university in the world when she grows up. And Rosa has been promoted to Estate Manager for all our properties, with a salary that ensures she’ll never have to worry about her mother’s medical bills again."

Margaret smiled, a warm, genuine expression that rarely made an appearance. "A just reward for a brave child. Bring them to the estate this weekend, Nathaniel. I want to thank them myself. And I believe I owe Lily a very large box of chocolates."
