Chapter 10 - The Symphony of Home

Five years later.
The Lake Forest estate on the shores of Lake Michigan was bathed in the golden light of a late summer sunset.
The gardens were alive with the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and lavender. Beneath the grand oak trees on the terrace, a small, intimate gathering of family and close friends had assembled.
A soft breeze rustled the leaves, carrying the gentle, magnificent sound of a piano being played inside the open French doors of the grand ballroom.
Playing the piano was nine-year-old Lily Bennett.
Her fingers flew across the ivory keys with breathtaking skill, producing a warm, sweeping melody that she had composed herself—a piece titled The Light on the Terrace.
Sitting on the terrace bench, watching her with tears of overflowing pride, was Nora Bennett, holding hands with Arthur Vance, whom she had married two years ago in the estate’s garden.
Standing near the stone balustrade overlooking the sparkling, dark waters of the lake stood Graham Mercer.
He wore a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers, his arm wrapped tightly around his wife, Claire Evans Mercer. In Claire’s arms rested their ten-month-old son, Leo, who was fast asleep against his mother’s chest, his tiny fingers clutching a small wooden rattle.
Graham turned his head, watching his family.
He listened to the piano music pouring from the ballroom. He listened to the soft, rhythmic ocean-like swell of Lake Michigan against the rocks below. He listened to the quiet, peaceful breathing of his infant son.
Every sound was crystalline. Every note was pure.
Lily finished her piano piece with a soft, lingering chord that resonated through the warm evening air.
The guests on the terrace erupted into warm, enthusiastic applause.
Lily ran out through the French doors into the sunshine, her dark curls bouncing, her face lit up with a brilliant, triumphant smile.
She ran straight toward Graham, throwing her arms around his waist.
"Did you hear it, Graham?!" she asked aloud, her voice clear, proud, and fluent. "Did you hear the whole song?!"
Graham dropped down onto one knee, wrapping his arms around the girl who had saved his life nine years ago when she was just a frightened, barefoot four-year-old holding a one-eyed rabbit in the cold.
He looked into her bright, beautiful eyes and spoke aloud, while his hands signed the words with liquid, perfect grace:
May you like
"I heard every single note, Lily," Graham said, his heart overflowing with absolute peace, love, and joy. "It is the most beautiful sound in the world."
Outside, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of gold, violet, and crimson, casting a warm, permanent light over the home where love, truth, and sound would reign forever.
