Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Love

Two years later.
It was a late summer evening at the Vale estate.
The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange, pink, and deep violet. A cool breeze blew off the Hudson River, rustling the leaves of the ancient oak trees that lined the property.
On the back porch, a massive wooden dining table was set for a family dinner.
Marcus and Daniel were sitting at one end, arguing good-naturedly over football scores while sharing a bottle of non-alcoholic wine. Dr. Evans sat nearby, laughing as he served homemade pasta to the senior security staff. The estate was filled with laughter, chatter, and the warm sounds of a genuine family.
Down on the grass, six-year-old Harper was running after a golden retriever puppy Dominic had gotten her for her birthday, her innocent laughter ringing out like music across the lawn.
Dominic stood near the edge of the terrace, a glass of iced tea in his hand, watching his family.
He wore comfortable dark slacks and a white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The hard, severe lines of his face had softened into a expression of deep, serene contentment. The scar on his knuckles remained, but the darkness in his eyes was gone forever.
A pair of soft arms wrapped around his waist from behind.
Dominic smiled, setting his glass down on the stone ledge, and turned around into the embrace of his wife.
Mia was radiant. She wore a simple yellow sundress, her hair tied back in a loose ponytail. Her skin glowed in the sunset light, and her warm smile was the bright center of Dominic’s world.
"Harper is going to tire that puppy out before dinner," Mia said softly, leaning her head against Dominic’s chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.
"Let her run," Dominic chuckled, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin gently on top of her head. "It keeps her out of trouble."
Mia looked up, her brown eyes twinkling with secret joy. She reached down, taking Dominic’s heavy hand, and gently placed it over her lower stomach.
Dominic froze.
He felt the subtle, warm curvature beneath her dress.
He looked down at his wife, his eyes widening in sudden, breathtaking realization. "Mia...?"
Mia smiled, tears of pure happiness brimming in her eyes as she nodded softly. "Dr. Evans confirmed it this morning. Four months, Dominic. It's a boy."
Dominic, the man who had faced mob bosses, hitmen, and betrayals without ever blinking, felt his knees go weak with overwhelming emotion.
A deep, emotional breath escaped his lips. He cupped her face in both of his massive hands, kissing her lips, her forehead, her cheeks, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the universe.
"A son..." Dominic whispered, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "A son..."
"A little brother for Harper," Mia smiled, resting her forehead against his. "A new generation of the Vale family... born in peace."
Harper came running up the terrace steps, the puppy tumbling behind her, barking playfully.
"Mommy! Mr. Dominic! Look! Barnaby learned how to sit!" Harper cheered, sliding to a stop on the smooth stone tiles. She looked at her parents holding each other tightly, her sharp little eyes catching the joyous tears on Dominic’s face.
"Why are you crying, Daddy?" Harper asked, her small face filling with sweet concern.
Dominic dropped to one knee on the terrace floor—the same floor where, two years ago, a terrified little girl in a wrinkled yellow nightgown had wrapped her tiny hands around his sleeve and asked him to listen.
He pulled Harper into his arms, hugging her tightly alongside Mia.
"I'm crying because I'm happy, sweetheart," Dominic murmured into Harper’s hair, holding both his wife and his daughter in a protective, unbreakable embrace. "Because I have everything I could ever ask for."
The sun finally dipped below the mountains, leaving a canopy of brilliant, shining stars across the clear night sky.

The old cellar beneath the estate remained locked and empty, forgotten by time. The betrayals of the past were buried deep, replaced forever by the sound of laughter, love, and a family that could never be broken.
