Chapter 7 - The Deposition of Donald Sterling

Three months before the criminal trial was set to begin in Boston, the legal battle reached its critical turning point inside a high-ceilinged conference room overlooking the Charles River.

Vanessa Whitman’s high-priced defense team, led by legendary criminal attorney Marcus Vance, had launched an aggressive smear campaign. They claimed Vanessa was the victim of a frame-up orchestrated by a disgruntled maid and a bitter, aging butler looking for a quiet pension payout. They argued the video evidence was tampered with and that the liquid Haloperidol had been planted in the house by Claire herself.

To break their strategy, the District Attorney called for an immediate, videotaped deposition of Donald Sterling, the former head butler.

Claire sat beside Grant and the prosecution team at the long mahogany table. Across from them sat Vanessa, dressed in a sharp gray jail-issued blazer, her blonde hair pulled back tightly, her face devoid of makeup but holding onto a desperate, icy defiance.

When Donald walked into the room, he looked older. The crisp, rigid posture of a master servant had given way to the stooped shoulders of a man carrying a heavy moral debt. He wore a plain dark suit and took his seat at the end of the table without looking at Vanessa.

"Mr. Sterling," the prosecutor began, adjusting his microphone. "You served the Whitman family for over twenty-two years. Is that correct?"

"It is," Donald replied, his voice raspy but steady.

"During the last twelve months of your employment, did you observe Mrs. Vanessa Whitman alter or tamper with master Noah Whitman’s meals or medication?"

Vanessa’s attorney immediately leaned forward. "Objection. Speculation."

"Answer the question, Mr. Sterling," the magistrate presiding over the deposition ordered.

Donald looked down at his folded hands on the table. A long, suffocating silence filled the room.

"I did," Donald said softly.

Vanessa’s jaw tightened, her eyes flashing with pure fury.

"Why didn't you step forward sooner, Donald?" the prosecutor asked gently. "Why didn't you go to Mr. Whitman or the police?"

Donald raised his head, his eyes fixing directly on Vanessa.

"Because Mrs. Whitman threatened me," Donald said, his voice growing stronger. "Six months after she married Mr. Whitman, she discovered that my youngest daughter had fallen into severe medical debt following a cancer diagnosis. Mrs. Whitman secretly paid off eighty thousand dollars of that debt through an offshore shell account."

Grant gasped softly, turning his head to stare at his former butler in utter shock.

"She kept the transfer receipts in her safe," Donald continued, tears glistening in his tired eyes. "When I first noticed Noah’s sudden loss of speech and the strange bottles in the pantry, I confronted her. She told me that if I said a single word to Grant or the doctors, she would file a formal police report claiming I had embezzled that money from the estate, and she would ensure my daughter was sued into bankruptcy while undergoing chemotherapy."

A low murmur rippled through the legal assistants in the room.

"So I stayed quiet," Donald whispered, a tear spilling down his cheek. "I traded a child's safety for my own family's comfort. I lived with that cowardice every day until the morning Claire Mason crawled out of that wall."

Donald turned his chair slightly, looking directly at Claire.

"Claire showed me what real loyalty looks like. She had everything to lose—her job, her brother's future, her safety—and she threw herself into the fire anyway. When I saw her standing covered in soot, protecting Noah with her own body, I knew that if I stayed silent any longer, I would die a soul-corrupted man."

Vanessa slammed her hands against the table, her face twisting into a mask of rage. "You lying old fool! I gave you everything! You were nothing without this family!"

"Silence in the room!" the magistrate ordered, slamming his gavel down.

Marcus Vance leaned over, frantically whispering to Vanessa, trying to pull her back into her chair, but the damage was done. The entire tirade was captured on high-definition video.

Grant reached across the table, his hand resting firmly over Claire’s trembling fingers. The defense’s narrative was shattered. The truth was out, locked in stone, and there was no way back for Vanessa Whitman.
