Chapter 9 - The Lioness's Fury

Emily did not hesitate. She didn't look for security, she didn't call for help, and she certainly didn't freeze. The timid, apologetic woman who had once stood trembling at a sink full of greasy dishes died that night. In her place stood a mother defending her cub.

Kick-starting her heels off in one fluid motion, Emily sprinted barefoot across the dark lawn like an Olympian.

The intruder reached the carriage, extending a heavy leather-gloved hand toward baby Lily.

"Get your filthy hands off my daughter!" Emily roared.

She tackled the man from behind with the full momentum of her body, slamming him headfirst into the stone pillar of the pavilion. The intruder groaned, stumbling backward in surprise as Emily placed her body directly over Lily’s carriage, her eyes blazing with a terrifying, primal fury.

The man recovered, drawing a tactical stun baton that crackled with blue electricity. "Move, lady, or I’ll drop you!"

"You'll have to kill me first," Emily spat, snatching a heavy bronze decorative vase from the garden table and swinging it with lethal precision.

CRACK!

The heavy bronze struck the intruder squarely across the jaw. He crumpled to the grass, unconscious.

At the same time, Margaret stepped out onto the upper patio. Eighty years old, wearing her floor-length silk gown and holding her late husband’s antique ivory-handled cane, she didn't run from the chaos.

When a second intruder rushed up the patio steps toward her, attempting to reach the house's master security panel, Margaret swung her cane with practiced, vicious accuracy, striking the man directly across his knee joint.

"I built this house, you pathetic thug!" Margaret commanded, her voice booming across the patio like thunder as the man fell groaning to his knees. "You do not cross this threshold!"

Within ninety seconds, Daniel Cho and the armed estate security team surrounded the remaining intruders. The estate’s backup emergency generators kicked in with a mighty roar, flooding the entire grounds with blinding halogen spotlights.

Sirens blared in the distance as six police cruisers and an FBI tactical unit tore up Crestview Manor’s driveway, blocking every exit route.

Special Agent Rodriguez stepped out of the lead cruiser, hand on his holster, looking at the scene: three intruders pinned to the grass by security, one unconscious near the pavilion, and Emily standing tall over her daughter, holding a dented bronze vase like a warrior queen.

"Mrs. Hartwell," Rodriguez said, looking at Emily in utter awe. "Are you alright?"

"I am fine, Agent Rodriguez," Emily said calmly, tossing the vase onto the grass and picking up baby Lily, who was sound asleep despite the noise. "Collect these men. And tell the warden at Cook County that Evan Vance just added twenty years of conspiracy to commit armed kidnapping to his sentence."
