Chapter 2: The Penthouse Sanctuary

The private medical wing of the Rowe Estate in Brookline did not look like a hospital. There were no lime-green walls or buzzing fluorescent bulbs. Instead, the room was lined with warm mahogany paneling, cashmere blankets, and state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment that had been flown in from Switzerland within two hours of Maren’s arrival.
Maren lay in the center of the massive king-sized bed, an IV drip running into the back of her left hand. The sharp, terrifying cramps had finally subsided into a dull ache, thanks to the high-dosage tocolytic medication administered by Dr. Aris Thorne, Damien’s personal physician.
The door clicked open softly. Damien walked in, carrying a cup of tea. He had discarded his jacket and tie; his white shirt sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, revealing the intricate, dark tattoos of the Chicago syndicate that lined his skin.
The Explanation of a Ghost
He sat on the edge of the mattress, setting the tea on the nightstand, and reached for her hand. Maren didn't pull away, but her eyes were wide with a hundred unasked questions, each one heavier than the last.
"You were dead," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Vincent showed me the photos. He showed me the car completely engulfed in flames. He told me the cartel had targeted everyone associated with you."
Damien leaned forward, pressing his forehead against her knuckles. A ragged sigh escaped him. "Vincent Hale is a traitor, Maren. He coordinated the ambush with the Moretti family in Chicago. He knew about the pregnancy before I did—he intercepted the medical report from my private courier."
Maren’s breath hitched. "He knew?"
"He knew that if I found out I had a child on the way, I would clean up the syndicate permanently. I would take the money out of the shadows and legitimize every asset to give you and our baby a normal life. He couldn't let that happen. The other families wanted the status quo. So Vincent staged the attack. He tried to kill me, and he used your terror to drive you into hiding where he could monitor you until he was ready to eliminate you."
"But how did you find me?" she asked, her hand moving automatically to her stomach, where the baby gave a soft, reassuring kick against her palm.
Damien smiled, a dark, dangerous expression that held no warmth except for her. "One of Chloe Ashford’s friends posted a video on social media yesterday morning. A 'funny' video of the pregnant janitor being forced to mop up a matcha latte. My intelligence grid flags any digital footprint matching your facial profile across North America. The moment that video uploaded to a server in Boston, I knew where you were."
He leaned down, placing his large palm over her belly, feeling the rhythmic movement of his unborn child. "I spent seven months clearing the rats out of Chicago, Maren. I tore the Moretti family apart piece by piece because I thought I had nothing left to lose. If I had known you were here... cleaning floors for those spoiled bastards..."
His jaw tightened so hard the bone looked ready to burst through his skin. "They will pay for every drop of sweat you shed in that building."
The Gathering of the Wolves
Outside the bedroom doors, the mansion was a hive of silent, lethal activity. Vincent Hale had already been captured in a safe house outside of Gary, Indiana, and was currently being transported to Boston by train in a reinforced steel container.
But Damien’s immediate focus was local. The Boston elite believed their wealth made them sovereign. They believed that because their grandfathers had arrived on the Mayflower, they were immune to the laws of the dirt.
Mikhail entered the room quietly, bowing his head. "Sir. The fathers have been assembled in the South Boston facility. Arthur Ashford, Richard Mercer, and Thomas Calloway. Headmaster Ellison is also present."
Damien stood up, his posture reverting instantly to that of the undisputed monarch of the criminal underworld. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, exquisite gold box. Inside was a heavy, flawless diamond ring—the one he had intended to give her the night the world ended in Chicago.
He placed it on her nightstand beside the tea. "Rest, little bird. The doctor says the baby is stable, but you need forty-eight hours of absolute quiet. I have some business to settle in the city."

Maren looked at the ring, then up at his dark, unyielding silhouette. "Damien... don't kill them. Don't become the monster they think you are."
Damien paused at the doorway, his back to her. "I won't kill them, Maren. Death is far too merciful for people who think money can buy their way out of a debt of blood."
