Chapter 7 - The Confrontation on the Porch

"Stay here with Agent Reyes and Evelyn," Sawyer told Gracie, his voice completely calm as he kissed her forehead. "I have to take care of something at the house."

"Sawyer," Evelyn warned, stepping toward the door. "Do not engage in physical altercations. Let the police handle it."

"I won't lay a finger on her," Sawyer said, pulling his coat on. "I'm just going to finish what should have been done three years ago."

Twenty minutes later, Sawyer’s SUV pulled up onto Oakhill Lane.

Bonnie Vance was standing on the front porch, furiously trying to slide a key into the deadbolt lock. But Sawyer had already had the locks re-keyed by a locksmith at 5:00 AM.

When she heard the SUV engine stop, Bonnie turned around, her face contorted in an ugly, frantic rage. She stomped down the porch steps, her designer heels clicking against the stone.

"Sawyer!" she screamed, her voice echoing down the quiet suburban street. "What did you do to these locks?! You changed the codes! How dare you lock me out of my daughter’s home!"

Sawyer stepped out of his vehicle, slammed the door shut, and walked calmly toward her, stopping at the base of the driveway. Arthur stood on his neighboring lawn, holding a high-definition digital camcorder aimed directly at Bonnie’s face.

"This isn't your daughter's home, Bonnie," Sawyer said, his voice cold and steady. "It’s mine. Bought and paid for with my money, earned while your daughter was spending thousands of dollars on shell company transfers."

"You set her up!" Bonnie shrieked, stepping closer, her face turning red. "You orchestrated that stupid video! You bought off that pathetic old man across the street! Carolina is her mother! You have no right to keep her away from her child!"

"The State of Michigan disagrees," Sawyer said smoothly, pulling a folded white document from his coat pocket and holding it out. "That is an emergency restraining order. It covers Gracie, myself, this property, and a one-thousand-foot perimeter. If you take one more step toward me, you are violating a state court order."

Bonnie snatched the paper, glanced at the judge's signature, and tore it in half, throwing the pieces onto the driveway.

"You think a piece of paper frightens me?!" she yelled. "We are going to ruin you, Sawyer! I have three of the best defense attorneys in Detroit on retainer! We will tie you up in custody battles until you don't have a single dollar left in your business!"

"With what money, Bonnie?" Sawyer asked, a cold, mocking smile touching his lips.

Bonnie froze. "What?"

"I met with the district attorney two hours ago," Sawyer revealed, stepping closer until he towered over her. "The forensic audit on Vance Legacy Holdings is complete. The bank accounts in Delaware have been frozen by federal grand jury subpoena. The $340,000 you embezzled from my company reserve? Frozen. The second mortgage you attempted to take out on this property? Flagged for wire fraud."

Bonnie swallowed hard, her arrogant posture suddenly sagging as if her spine had dissolved. "You... you can't freeze those accounts..."

"They are frozen, Bonnie," Sawyer continued, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "And because the wire transfers crossed state lines into Delaware, the FBI's financial crimes unit took over the case at nine o'clock this morning. You aren't going to be paying for three defense attorneys. You're going to be looking for a public defender."

"Sawyer... please..." Bonnie’s voice suddenly cracked, shifting from rage to pathetic desperation. "Carolina is young... she made a mistake! She was stressed! You can't let her go to prison! Think of what this will do to our family name!"

"Your family name meant nothing when my daughter was bleeding on my hallway floor," Sawyer said without a shred of pity. "Get off my property."

"Sawyer—"

"Arthur," Sawyer called out over his shoulder. "Is the camera recording?"

"Crystal clear, Sawyer!" Arthur shouted back from his lawn. "Audio and 4K video!"

"Call Deputy Vance," Sawyer ordered. "Tell him Bonnie Vance is currently violating a judicial protection order on my driveway."

Bonnie looked at Arthur's camera, looked at Sawyer's unyielding eyes, and realized that her decades of social manipulation and arrogance had hit an impenetrable wall of steel.

She turned around without another word, practically running back to her luxury sedan. She scrambled inside, slammed the door, and tore down Oakhill Lane, her tires screeching against the wet pavement.

Sawyer stood alone on his driveway, watching her car disappear around the corner.

He took a deep breath of the cold morning air, feeling the heavy, suffocating shadow that had hung over his life for eight years finally lift away into the blue sky.
