Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Treason

The arrest at the corporate office was the catalyst that brought down the entire house of cards Beverly had spent twenty years building.

Three days after her arrest, Marcus called me into his office. The news was even bigger than we anticipated.

"When the police processed Beverly’s personal computer under the financial fraud warrant," Marcus said, sliding a thick digital audit log across his desk, "they found something that goes way beyond bank fraud."

I looked at the files. "What is this?"

"Arthur’s death five years ago," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a somber, angry register. "You remember how his commercial real estate firm suddenly collapsed right before he died of his stroke?"

"Of course," I said. "Beverly always claimed Arthur’s partner had embezzled the funds and left him ruined."

"Arthur’s partner didn't embezzle a dime," Marcus said, tapping the screen. "Beverly did. She was funneling money out of Arthur’s corporate accounts into an offshore shell entity in Belize for three years prior to his death. When Arthur began to suspect something was wrong and threatened an audit, she used his failing health to secure full power of attorney, altered his will days before he passed, and pinned the missing $1.5 million on his partner."

I sat frozen, the magnitude of her depravity washing over me. "She destroyed my father’s life's work... and then made him die thinking his best friend had betrayed him?"

"She did," Marcus confirmed grimly. "And guess who assisted her with the digital fund transfers back in 2019? Your sister, Joanna."

"Joanna knew?"

"Joanna was paid a $5,000 monthly 'consulting fee' out of that Belize account for two years," Marcus revealed. "That’s why Joanna was so terrified of you cutting off the transfers, Claire. It wasn't just about her luxury car or Harper’s school. She and Beverly were using your $18,000 a month to pay down the interest on a secret bridge loan they used to cover up the Belize tax evasion!"

I leaned back in my chair, staring out at the Phoenix skyline. Everything I had been told about my family was a lie. The narrative that I was the cold, unfeeling daughter who owed them for their sacrifices was a carefully crafted fiction designed to exploit my guilt and extract millions of dollars to pay for their criminal hidden lives.

"What happens to them now?" I asked softly.

"Beverly is facing state bank fraud, grand larceny, and federal tax evasion charges," Marcus said. "Because of her age, she might have bargained for house arrest—except she used the trust property as illegal collateral, so she has no house to be arrested in. The Paradise Valley house goes to auction next week to repay the trust."

"And Joanna?"

"Joanna is being named as a co-conspirator in the federal tax indictment. Her lawyer is currently begging the prosecutor for a plea deal, offering to testify against Beverly in exchange for probation."

I let out a long, slow breath. The venom was finally being drawn from the wound.

"And the trust money?" I asked. "The original money my father intended for the family?"

"Once the Paradise Valley house is sold and the liabilities cleared," Marcus smiled warmly, "the remaining balance—approximately $3.2 million—will be placed into an irrevocable educational and living trust under one name only."

"Maisie’s," I said.

"Maisie’s," Marcus confirmed. "Beverly and Joanna will never touch another cent of Arthur’s legacy. It goes straight to your daughter when she turns twenty-one."
