Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

Three months later.

The spring sun was warm, melting the last remnants of the winter snow in Briar Glen. The maple trees in the cemetery were starting to bud with fresh, green leaves.

Ethan stood before Sarah’s headstone. The grass was greening around the base of the marble monument.

He wasn't alone.

Grace stood beside him, her arm resting gently in his. She looked healthy, the dark circles under her eyes gone, replaced by a quiet, peaceful glow.

And between them was Lily.

The little girl was wearing a bright yellow sundress, her dark curls bouncing as she chased a yellow butterfly through the headstones. Her laughter was light, musical, and filled the quiet cemetery with a beautiful, vibrant life.

The Genesis Institute had been shut down by the federal government. Dr. Vance and several high-ranking board members of Vanguard Biologics were currently awaiting trial on charges ranging from illegal genetic experimentation to kidnapping and attempted murder.

Detective Vance had cleared Ethan’s name, and the town of Briar Glen had welcomed their hero firefighter back with open arms.

But Ethan had decided to take some time off. He had a daughter to raise.

Lily ran back to them, her face flushed with excitement. She held up a small, yellow dandelion.

"Look, Daddy! I found a flower for Mommy."

Ethan knelt down, his chest swelling with an emotion so pure and powerful it brought tears to his eyes. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close.

"It's beautiful, Lily," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling. "Just like her."

Grace knelt beside them, placing a hand on Ethan’s shoulder. "We did it, Ethan. She’s safe. We’re safe."

Ethan looked up at the sky, feeling the warmth of the sun on his face. For five years, he had lived in the shadow of a cold, black river of grief. But as he looked at his daughter—Sarah's miracle, their beautiful Lily—he knew the winter was finally over.

"Yes, we are," Ethan said, kissing Lily’s forehead. "Let's go home."

And as they walked out of the cemetery hand in hand, the little girl looked up at him, her warm brown eyes shining with complete trust.
