Chapter 5 - The Assessment

On Sunday afternoon, the living room of the Connecticut house was transformed into a quiet courtroom.

Dr. Harrison Vance sat opposite Grandpa Theodore. Between them was a small video camera on a tripod, recording every second of the interaction. I stood in the corner beside Evelyn Vance, my hands clenched so tightly my nails were biting into my palms.

"Theodore," Dr. Vance said, his voice warm but professional. "Do you know what day it is?"

"It is Sunday, December 28th, 2026," Grandpa replied without a second's hesitation. "The current temperature outside is twenty-eight degrees, and there is a winter storm warning in effect for Hartford County."

For the next two hours, Dr. Vance conducted one of the most rigorous neurological and cognitive assessments I had ever witnessed. He asked Grandpa to recall complex mathematical patterns, to explain the intricate details of his former company's shipping logistics, and to analyze current global political events.

Grandpa Theodore didn't just pass; he performed flawlessly. His memory was sharp, his logic impeccable, and his articulation clear and commanding.

"And finally, Theodore," Dr. Vance said, leaning back. "Can you tell me why you decided to alter your estate planning and remove your son, Richard, from your will?"

Grandpa Theodore looked directly into the camera lens.

"Because my son is a thief," Theodore said, his voice steady, carrying the absolute weight of a father’s broken heart. "He took advantage of my physical recovery after my stroke to systematically drain my retirement accounts. He forged my signature on twenty-four checks, totaling over six hundred thousand dollars. He attempted to isolate me from my granddaughter, Avery, and when he was caught, he threatened to use a bribed medical report to lock me in an asylum."

He took a slow, deep breath, his green eyes flashing with a cold, unyielding fire.

"I am of sound mind, Dr. Vance. And I will spend my last breath, and my last dollar, ensuring that Richard Hartley faces the full consequence of his treason."

Dr. Vance turned off the camera with a soft click. He looked at Evelyn, then at me, a profound look of respect on his face.

"He is as sharp as a whip, Charles," Dr. Vance said, packing his medical kit. "The report Richard submitted was written by Dr. Kenneth Aris—a man who lost his medical license in New York last year for writing fraudulent evaluations for wealthy clients. I will personally present my evaluation, along with this video recording, to the probate judge tomorrow morning. Richard’s motion won't just be denied; it’s going to be laughed out of court."

Evelyn Vance smiled, her eyes cold and calculating. "And once the judge throws out the conservatorship motion, we are going to file our own counter-suit for malicious prosecution and elder abuse. Richard and Beatrice aren't just losing the house, Avery. They are going to lose their freedom."
