Two years later, I stood in my own backyard, watching Leo chase our golden retriever across the grass.
My truck was parked in the driveway—repaired, polished, and running better than the day I bought it. It was no longer just a symbol of my independence; it was a reminder of the life I had built on my own terms.
My phone buzzed. It was a lawyer.
"The final foreclosure on the lake house is complete, Ms. Vale. Your family has been officially evicted."
I looked at the house, the sun setting over the trees, casting long, golden shadows across the lawn.
Callum walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. "Are you okay with this?"
"I was never afraid of them," I said, leaning back into him. "I was only afraid of the girl I used to be—the one who thought she had to apologize for taking up space."
