Chapter 4: The Corporate Guillotine

The emergency board meeting of Whitaker Logistics was called for Thursday morning at the corporate headquarters in downtown Cleveland. My father sat at the head of the long mahogany table, looking desperate but arrogant, flanked by the remaining four minority board members whom he had bought off years ago with company perks.
"This meeting is an illegal farce," my father said, slamming his hand on the table as David and I walked into the room. "Mara has no standing here. She is not a shareholder."
"She is the proxy for Evelyn Whitaker, who holds sixty percent of the voting power," David replied calmly, taking his seat at the opposite end of the table. He opened his laptop, connecting it to the grand projector screen on the wall.
"Gentlemen," I said, looking at the board members who had turned a blind eye to my father's corruption for years. "For the past five years, Richard Whitaker has been using this company as his personal piggy bank. He has hidden liabilities, forged corporate minutes, and attempted to illegally liquidate the Cleveland hub."
"Lies!" my father screamed, standing up so fast his leather chair flipped backward. "You have no proof!"
"Play the audio, David," I said quietly.
The speakers in the boardroom came alive with my father’s own voice from the flash drive, threatening Grandma in her freezing bedroom, admitting to the offshore transfers, boasting about how no one would believe an old woman.
The minority board members went dead silent, their faces draining of color as they realized they were sitting next to a corporate nuclear bomb.
"But that's not all," I continued, clicking a button on my remote. The screen shifted to a live tracking manifest of the Port of Manzanillo. "We have already submitted these financial records to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Internal Revenue Service. As of 8:00 a.m. this morning, all of Richard Whitaker’s personal and corporate bank accounts have been frozen under a federal asset forfeiture warrant."
My father stumbled backward, his hand catching the edge of the table as his world collapsed around him. "No... no, that’s impossible. I have immunity..."
"You have nothing, Richard," David said, standing up and closing his laptop. "The board will now vote on the immediate removal of Richard Whitaker as CEO, to be replaced by Mara Whitaker effective immediately. All in favor?"

The four minority board members didn't hesitate. Every single one of them raised their hands, avoiding my father's desperate, pleading eyes.
"The motion carries," I said, looking at the man who had left his own mother to die for a vacation. "Security is waiting outside to escort you from the building, Richard. Don't worry about packing your office. The federal marshals will be doing that for you."
