Chapter 3: The Hidden Livestream

The office of Arthur Vance, senior partner at Vance & Associates, overlooked the downtown skyline of Cleveland. It was Monday morning, 9:00 AM. Arthur was a legendary corporate litigator, known for his ruthless handling of high-profile defamation and intellectual property cases. He was also my godfather, a man who had watched Lily take her first steps.

He sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reviewing the medical report and the photographs I had laid out before him. Beside me, Emma sat with a folder containing three years of prints from Vanessa’s Golden Morning Mama social media pages.

“She’s built a multi-million-dollar digital empire on the myth of the perfect, gentle family,” Arthur said, his fingers steepled as he looked at the screen. “She has active sponsorship contracts with three major national brands—a luxury cookware line, an organic children’s clothing brand, and a national wellness corporation. Total estimated annual revenue: $2.4 million.”

“I don't care about her money, Arthur,” I said, leaning forward. “I care about the fact that she used my child as an uncredited prop to boost her engagement, and then physically mutilated her when the audience liked the prop more than her own daughter.”

Arthur tapped a key on his keyboard. “Take a look at this. My digital forensics team spent the night scraping Vanessa’s server logs. She didn't just record a video on her coffee table yesterday afternoon, Rachel. She accidentally left an unlisted, private livestream running on her secondary subscriber channel—the one her high-tier donors pay fifty dollars a month to access for 'behind-the-scenes' content.”

My breath caught in my throat. “What?”

Arthur turned the monitor toward us. A video player appeared, showing the high-definition view from the hidden nanny cam disguised as a digital clock in Vanessa’s playroom. The timestamp read yesterday afternoon, 2:14 PM.

The video was agonizing to watch.

Vanessa could be seen standing over Lily, who was sitting on a small wooden stool. Vanessa’s face wasn't the soft, smiling mask of Golden Morning Mama. It was contorted with a vicious, cold envy. She was holding a pair of heavy silver kitchen shears. Chloe was sitting in the corner, her hands over her ears, sobbing silently.

“You think you’re special, don't you?” Vanessa’s voice boomed through Arthur’s high-end speakers, sharp and cruel. “You think you can just show up in my videos and take everything I built for Chloe? Your mother thinks she’s better than me because she didn't sell her life online, but look at you now. Let’s see what those comment sections say when you look like a ragged little dog.”

Lily began to cry, trying to squirm away. “Aunt Vanessa, please, it hurts! You’re pulling my hair!”

“Sit still!” Vanessa snarled, her hand gripping Lily’s neck with immense force. The shears came down in rapid, jagged hacks. The long, beautiful dark braid fell to the floor like a dead thing. The metal tip of the shears scraped against the side of Lily's head, and a thin line of crimson immediately bloomed above her ear.

Vanessa didn't flinch. She picked up the braid, shoved it into a plastic Ziploc bag, and threw the pink bucket hat onto Lily's bleeding head. “You tell your mother you found the scissors in the drawer. If you say a word about this, I’ll tell the school you’re a thief and they’ll expel you. Do you understand me?”

The video cut off as Vanessa walked over and unplugged the clock, realizing too late that the backup battery had kept the feed live to her private subscriber cloud.

Emma was sobbing uncontrollably into her hands. My knuckles turned white against the armrest of the chair. The rage inside me didn't hot-boil; it froze over into a beautiful, perfect sheet of ice.

“Arthur,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. “Can we use this?”

“Use it?” Arthur let out a cold, dark laugh. “Rachel, this isn't just a lawsuit anymore. This is a federal civil rights violation, child exploitation, and aggravated assault. By the time I’m done with her, Vanessa won't just lose her sponsors. She’ll be wearing a matching set of orange scrubs
