Chapter 5 - THE EMBEZZLER’S MIRROR

The boardroom was deathly quiet save for the crisp sound of pages flipping.
Evelyn Thorne’s eyes widened as she scanned the financial charts on page twelve. “My God...”
“As you can see,” Marcus Vance explained, standing at the head of the table, “NorthStar Facility Solutions is a fraudulent front entity owned entirely by Apex Management Group. Apex Management Group’s primary controlling shareholder—holding thirty-five percent of non-voting stock and forty percent of revenue dividends—is Richard Sterling.”
Sterling stood frozen behind his chair, his hands trembling slightly as he stared down at his own signature printed on offshore wire-transfer receipts.
“Over the last four years,” Marcus continued, “Mr. Sterling has systematically inflated Whitmore Dynamics' sanitation and facility maintenance budgets by 300 percent. He funnelled over $32 million out of this corporation’s treasury into Apex offshore accounts in Grand Cayman.”
“That’s a lie!” Sterling roared, his voice cracking with desperation. “These documents are fabricated! Grant created them to divert attention from his failing acquisition!”
“To maximize those illicit profits,” Grant interrupted, his voice cutting through Sterling’s shouts like a sword, “Richard enforced a brutal, illegal labor regime on the six hundred cleaning staff who maintain our facilities. He paid them below poverty wages, denied them medical coverage, and instituted a three-strike rule that fired mothers if their children got sick.”
Grant leaned over the table, pressing both palms onto the polished wood, staring straight into Sterling’s panicked eyes.
“And to ensure no one ever complained,” Grant said, “he used our legal department to enforce non-disclosure agreements and illegal eviction threats using property management companies he secretly owned.”
Arthur Pendelton stood up, looking at Sterling with absolute, unadulterated disgust. “Richard... is this true? Did you use corporate funds to run a sweatshop operation inside our own headquarters?”
“It was for the bottom line!” Sterling screamed, dropping all pretense of denial as panic completely overtook him. “Look at the earnings reports! Apex increased our net operational efficiency by fourteen percent over three years! Every corporate entity outsources labor liability! You all took your dividend checks! None of you asked where the savings came from!”
Evelyn Thorne slammed her folder shut, her face flushed with fury. “We didn't ask because we trusted our Chief Operating Officer not to act like a common criminal!”
Suddenly, the heavy frosted doors of the boardroom opened once again.
Two federal marshals in dark suits, accompanied by three officers of the Chicago Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division, stepped into the room.
The lead marshal pulled out an official arrest warrant. “Richard Sterling?”
Sterling stumbled back, knocking his leather chair onto its side. “No... wait! You don't understand! I have immunity clauses in my executive contract! Call my attorney!”
“You have the right to remain silent, Mr. Sterling,” the marshal said coldly, stepping forward and pulling Sterling’s arms behind his back. The sharp CLICK of steel handcuffs echoed loudly against the glass walls of the room.
As the officers began dragging the disgraced COO out of the boardroom, Sterling turned his head, glaring furiously at Grant.
“You ruined yourself for this, Grant!” Sterling spat, blood dripping from where he had bitten his own lip in rage. “You brought down Apex! The stock is going to plummet! The board will crush you for creating a public scandal!”
Grant didn't flinch. He stood tall beside Emma’s chair, watching silently as Sterling was dragged down the hallway in chains.
When the room fell quiet once again, Grant turned back to the remaining board members.
“Richard was right about one thing,” Grant said quietly. “The stock will take a hit when this news breaks at noon. The media will call us cruel. They will call us negligent. And they will be right.”
Evelyn Thorne looked at Grant, her expression grim. “So what do we do, Grant? How do we save this company?”
May you like
Grant reached down and gently took Emma’s small hand in his.
“We don't save the company by hiding behind lawyers, Evelyn,” Grant said. “We save it by fixing what we broke.”
