Chapter 4 - The Crack in the Citadel

The Sterling estate was an imposing, vulgar spectacle of neo-colonial architecture, perched atop a private crest overlooking the town of Sterling Falls. Surrounded by ten-foot wrought-iron fences, electronic security gates, and private armed security patrols, it had served as the unassailable seat of power for Charles Sterling for over three decades.

Inside the grand dining room, the atmosphere was suffused with panic.

Charles Sterling—a tall, white-haired man in his late sixties with cold blue eyes and a permanent scowl—was screaming into his desk phone.

“What do you mean the assets are frozen? I don’t care if it’s an automated Treasury hold! Call the regional bank president in Charlotte! Tell him Charles Sterling is on the line!”

He slammed the receiver down so hard the antique wooden casing cracked. Across the long mahogany table, his two sons, Rowan and Jaxson, sat nursing glasses of expensive bourbon. Rowan was thirty-two, broad-shouldered, with a bloated face and wild, arrogant eyes. Jaxson, twenty-nine, was thinner, twitchier, his hands trembling as he stared at his smartphone screen.

“Dad,” Jaxson stammered. “My corporate card just got declined at the private airport. I was trying to fuel up the Cessna for the weekend flight to Miami. The attendant said the card had a 'Federal Seizure Hold' status.”

“Shut up!” Charles roared. “Both of you, shut your mouths! What did you idiots do to that girl? I told you to discipline her quietly! Why the hell was she taken to an Asheville hospital instead of our private physician in town?”

Rowan took a long swallow of his drink and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. “The little brat wouldn’t stop screaming, Dad. Miranda was complaining about the noise. Jaxson and I just took her outside to teach her a lesson. How were we supposed to know some low-life nurse in Asheville would call the state authorities?”

“Because Marcus Vance isn’t a low-life!” Charles screamed, his face turning purple with rage. “He’s a decorated First Sergeant with military connections! I told you years ago that Miranda marrying that soldier was a mistake, but you two idiots thought you could treat his daughter like one of the mill hands!”

Miranda entered the room, looking pale. Her pristine silk blouse was slightly rumpled, and her manicured fingers clutched her phone like a lifeline.

“Dad,” Miranda whispered. “The radio station... Sterling Mountain Media just went dark. The FCC issued an emergency suspension of our broadcast license citing unsanctioned financial operations and illegal interference with federal frequencies.”

Before Charles could respond, the heavy wooden front doors of the estate echoed with three booming knocks that reverberated through the grand entrance hall.

Rowan stood up, grabbing a loaded custom handgun from a sideboard drawer. “If that’s Vance, I’ll end this right now.”

“Put that weapon down, you foolish boy!” Charles barked, though his own voice shook.

The heavy front doors didn’t wait for an answer. With a loud metallic crunch, the primary security lock was breached, and four men in tactical windbreakers featuring bold, reflective gold letters—U.S. MARSHAL and IRS-CI—walked into the foyer, flanked by three uniformed North Carolina State Troopers.

Leading the federal team was Special Agent Sarah Vance-Lopez—a federal prosecutor turned Lead Investigator for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

“Charles Sterling?” Agent Vance-Lopez called out, holding a thick leather folder in her gloved hand.

Charles stepped into the foyer, trying to muster his usual regal authority. “What is the meaning of this illegal intrusion? I am a personal friend of the Governor! You have no right to enter my home without a signed warrant from Judge Vance!”

Agent Vance-Lopez offered a cold, satisfied smile. She held up a thick packet of official documents bearing the blue seal of the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina.

“Judge Vance’s jurisdiction was superseded three hours ago when a federal grand jury convened in Charlotte,” she said. “We have warrants for the immediate arrest of Rowan Sterling and Jaxson Sterling for conspiracy to commit severe bodily injury, federal witness tampering, and violations of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act regarding targeted domestic violence against a minor.”

Rowan backed away, his hand tightening around the hidden firearm behind his back. “You can’t touch us in this county! Landry!” he screamed toward the door. “Landry, get in here!”

One of the State Troopers stepped forward, his expression severe. “Sheriff Landry won’t be helping you today, Mr. Sterling. Sheriff Landry was taken into federal custody twenty minutes ago at his office. He is currently being booked on charges of racketeering, extortion, and obstruction of justice.”

The color completely drained from Miranda’s face. She staggered back against the marble staircase railing, her breath coming in shallow gasps.

“And as for you, Mrs. Miranda Sterling,” Agent Vance-Lopez turned her gaze onto her. “You are under arrest as an accessory to felony child abuse, child endangerment, and federal financial fraud.”

May you like

“No!” Miranda shrieked. “I didn’t touch her! I didn’t do anything! I was inside! I just closed the curtain!”

Agent Vance-Lopez looked at her with pure disdain. “Closing that curtain, Mrs. Sterling, was your biggest mistake. We have the video.”
