Chapter 7 - The Road Back

Three weeks passed.

The news of the scandal had rocked Silverspring's business community, but Victor had managed the crisis with surgical precision. Instead of hiding from the media, he held a prime-time press conference alongside Catherine and their legal team.

He publicly exposed the entire conspiracy, revealed his mother’s embezzlement and Julian’s gambling debts, and announced the creation of the Annie Williams Foundation—a fifty-million-dollar charity dedicated to supporting low-income mothers suffering from chronic illnesses.

The public backlash against Maris and Julian was absolute. Julian was denied bail due to his ties to offshore flight risks, while Maris was placed under house arrest at a small, monitored suburban apartment pending her trial for grand larceny and child endangerment.

Meanwhile, in the private sunroom of Victor’s newly purchased coastal estate—far away from the noise and painful memories of the old Williams mansion—Catherine sat in a comfortable armchair, wrapped in a soft cashmere shawl.

Her skin had regained its healthy glow, her hair was shining under the warm sunlight, and her physical therapy was progressing rapidly.

Annie was sitting on a plush rug at her feet, happily drawing pictures of a big white house with three figures holding hands under a bright yellow sun.

Victor walked into the sunroom carrying a tray with two cups of hot chocolate and a plate of fresh, warm sweet bread from a local bakery.

Annie looked up, her big eyes lighting up. "Dad! Is that the good bread?"

Victor laughed, kneeling beside her and placing the tray on the low coffee table. "The best in the city, sweetheart. Fresh from the oven."

Annie picked up a piece, took a big bite, and then handed half of it to Catherine. "Here, Mom. You don't ever have to worry about food again. Dad bought the whole bakery."

Catherine chuckled softly, taking the bread. She looked up at Victor, her eyes filling with a warm, gentle light. "Did you really buy the bakery?"

"I bought a fifty percent stake," Victor admitted with a sheepish smile, sitting on the arm of her chair and wrapping his hand around hers. "I wanted to make sure they never run out of Annie’s favorite pastries."

Catherine rested her head against his waist, feeling the solid, unshakable reality of his presence. "It feels like a dream, Victor. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night terrified that I’m still in that room in Northside, listening to the rain."

Victor leaned down, pressing a long, tender kiss to her lips. "You will never be in the dark again, my love. I swear it on my life."

A soft knock at the sunroom door interrupted them. Sophia Sterling stepped inside, carrying a final set of legal documents.

"Sorry to disturb the family time," Sophia said with a warm smile, setting the folder on the table. "I have the final settlement papers from the city municipal board."

Victor looked up. "Did they approve the land transfer?"

"Fully executed," Sophia reported. "The Northern Industrial Zone parcel has been legally restored to Catherine’s name. The city’s commercial airport development group has signed the lease agreement. The first royalty check of four million dollars was deposited into Catherine’s private account this morning."

Catherine blinked in shock. "Four million dollars?"

"And that’s just the advance, Mrs. Williams," Sophia smiled. "You are now one of the primary landholders in the northern district."

Catherine looked at Victor, overwhelmed, but Victor simply smiled and kissed her forehead again.

"It was always yours, Catherine," Victor said gently. "I just helped you claim what was stolen."
