Chapter 7 - The High Table's Reckoning

By dawn, the blizzard had passed, leaving the city blanketed in a pristine, blinding white.

We had gathered at my primary safehouse—a fortified penthouse on the top floor of a high-rise downtown that no one in the Syndicate knew existed. Marcus was sleeping peacefully in the guest room after being treated by a private physician I had summoned in the middle of the night. His wounds were severe, but he would recover.

In the living room, Clara was sitting on a soft wool rug in front of the fireplace, wrapped in a warm blanket, eating a bowl of warm soup. Bear sat right beside her, enjoying a large plate of prime steak cuts I’d taken from the freezer.

The dog looked entirely different now—his coat was washed, his shoulder bandaged properly, and for the first time, his head rested comfortably on Clara’s lap without trembling.

I sat at the heavy glass desk across the room, the bloodline ledger open before me, alongside my encrypted laptop.

The names in the ledger were a roadmap of the city's corrupt power structure: three supreme court judges, the chief of police, five city council members, and the four heads of the High Table who had governed the underworld from the shadows while I ran the streets.

For twenty years, I had believed I was the absolute ruler of this city. But reading these pages made it clear: I had just been their heavy hand—their weapon to keep the streets in line while they collected the real fortunes.

My phone chimed with an incoming secure transmission.

It was an invite to an emergency summit of the High Table, scheduled for noon at the Grand Palace Hotel penthouse. The message was brief: Gabriel Ross has failed to report. Julian Vance is declared rogue. Order of termination issued.

I looked up from the screen to Clara, who was laughing softly as Bear tried to lick a drop of soup from her chin.

"Is Daddy going to be okay?" she asked, looking across the room at me.

"He's going to be fine, Clara," I said, walking over and kneeling beside her on the rug. "He just needs rest."

"Are you going away again?" she asked, her smile fading slightly.

"Just for a little while," I said, reaching out to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "I have to finish cleaning up the mess so we can live in peace."

She looked at me with those deep, intelligent eyes that reminded me so much of Elena. She reached into her sweater, pulled out the silver locket, and placed it in my hand.

"Take this," she whispered. "So you remember to come back."

I closed my fingers around the cold silver, feeling the tiny frame of her mother’s picture inside.

"I'll come back," I promised. "I always come back."

I stood up, pulled my black leather coat over my suit, and checked the primary magazine of my weapon.

"Bear," I called softly.

The dog stood up immediately, looking at me with alert eyes.

"Watch the door," I commanded.

Bear trotted to the entrance of the penthouse, laying down across the entryway with his ears perked up, watchful and ready.

I left the penthouse, stepping into the elevator. It was time to pull down the pillars of the temple.
