Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

That evening, the sun set over the mountains in a breathtaking display of violet, gold, and deep indigo.
Emma and I sat on the wide wooden porch of our home, watching the fireflies begin to dance across the lawn. The Golden Retriever—now a full-grown, magnificent dog—lay at our feet, his head resting peacefully on my boots.
The cool evening breeze carried the scent of night-blooming jasmine and damp earth.
Emma leaned her head against my shoulder, her arm tucked securely into mine.
"Dad?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, Emma?"
"Do you ever think about them?" she asked softly. "In prison?"
I took a slow breath, looking out at the quiet, peaceful street that had once been the site of so much terror.
"Sometimes," I admitted honestly. "Not with anger anymore. Just with sadness that people can choose to be so blind to what really matters."
"I don't think about them at all," Emma said, her tone completely peaceful. "When I think about my life, I only think about the moment you walked through that door."
She looked up at me, her gray eyes clear, bright, and unbroken.
"You saved me, Dad."
I reached over, pulling her tightly against my side, kissing the top of her head.
"You saved me too, baby," I whispered. "You showed me what I was fighting for all those years."
We sat together in the quiet twilight as the stars began to appear one by one in the vast, clear sky above us.
There were no more emergency alerts. No more alarms. No more shadow in the dark.
