Chapter 6 - The Siege of Vance Manor

The silence of the quiet suburban estate was shattered by the deafening roar of a heavy diesel engine.

Through the tall glass windows of the library, Madison saw a heavy commercial flatbed truck crash directly through the forged-iron perimeter gates, tearing the heavy stone pillars from their foundations in a cloud of dust and flying mortar.

Behind the truck, three black SUVs swerved onto the estate’s manicured lawn, their heavy tires tearing deep ruts into the green grass. Men wearing dark tactical gear, face masks, and holding automatic weapons leaped out of the vehicles, fanning out across the driveway toward the front steps of the mansion.

Victor Thorne was not waiting for courts or lawyers anymore. He was taking his evidence back by force.

Inside the foyer, Marcus was shouting orders to his security personnel. "Fallback positions! Secure the East Wing! Get Mr. Vance and the children into the panic room!"

Panicked screams echoed through the hallway as the house staff rushed toward the service elevators. Sarah grabbed little Jack and Lily, shielding them with her body, while Arthur Sterling frantically swept up the legal files from the table.

Julian stood in the center of the grand foyer. He didn't look panicked. His face was cold, calculating, and terrifyingly calm.

"Marcus," Julian said over the sound of breaking glass at the rear patio. "How long until the state police tactical unit arrives?"

"The local precinct is jammed up with false emergency calls, Julian!" Marcus yelled, firing two suppression shots through the reinforced glass of the side entrance to keep the attackers at bay. "Thorne bought thirty minutes of response delay! We are on our own!"

"Julian!" Madison cried out, running toward him and grabbing his coat sleeve. Her face was pale, her body shaking violently with traumatic terror. "They’re going to hurt you! Like they hurt Mom!"

Julian dropped to one knee, putting his heavy hands on her shoulders. He looked into her terrified eyes with an intensity that cut through the chaos around them.

"Listen to me, Madison," Julian said, his voice as solid as a iron anchor. "Nobody hurts anyone in this house today. Do you hear me? Arthur is going to take you, Lily, and Jack down to the basement vault. It is built under six feet of solid steel and concrete. Nothing on earth can open those doors from the outside."

"No!" Madison wept, clutching his lapel. "Come with us!"

"I have to lock the vault from the control room above," Julian said gently. He reached into Arthur’s hand, took the silver thumb ring, and placed it back into Madison’s small palm, closing her fingers tightly over it. "Keep this safe. I promised you that no one takes your family away. Now go!"

Arthur grabbed Madison’s hand, leading her and Sarah down the narrow service staircase toward the subterranean levels of the mansion.

Julian stood up, pulling a slim black electronic tablet from his jacket pocket. He walked steadily toward his library, locking the heavy oak doors behind him.

Outside the library doors, shouts, heavy footsteps, and the sharp crack of breaking wood echoed through the high-ceilinged hallways. Marcus’s team was fighting a disciplined delay action, pulling back step by step toward the central wing.

The heavy library doors shuddered violently under a massive kick. The brass lock snapped, and the doors swung open with a bang.

Three armed men in tactical gear burst into the room, their weapons raised. Following behind them, stepping slowly over the broken wood debris, was Victor Thorne.

Thorne was sixty years old, wearing a tailored navy overcoat and holding a silver-tipped walking cane. His face was hard, angular, and devoid of any human warmth. His cold gray eyes swept across the room, landing on Julian Vance, who was sitting comfortably behind his heavy glass desk, holding a glass of scotch.

"Julian," Thorne said, his voice a dry, gravelly rasp. "You’ve made a remarkably foolish investment."

Julian didn't stand up. He took a slow sip of his drink and set the crystal glass back down on the desk.

"Victor," Julian replied smoothly. "You’ve ruined my lawn. My gardener is going to be extremely upset with you."

Thorne let out a dry, humorless chuckle, leaning his weight onto his cane. "I don't care about your lawn, Julian. And I don't care about your billions. You took something that belongs to me—three children and a piece of hardware that Eleanor Bennett stole from my private vault six months ago."

"They don't belong to you, Victor," Julian said coldly. "And neither does this city."

Thorne signaled to his men, who stepped forward, pointing their rifles at Julian’s chest.

"Where is the ring, Julian?" Thorne asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Give it to me, and I’ll leave you alive in this empty house. Refuse... and I will burn this mansion to the ground with you and those bastard children inside it."

Julian looked down at the tablet resting on his desk. A green progress bar on the screen reached 100%.

Julian smiled—a cold, terrifying grin that made Thorne’s lead guard instinctively tighten his finger on his trigger.

"You're five minutes too late, Victor," Julian said softly.
