Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Marcus Vance

The air in the luxurious suite grew instantly heavy.
Clara stood up, her eyes wide with sudden alarm. "Have you been investigating me? Why do you know my father's name?"
"Because the man who ruined your father five years ago," Ethan explained, his voice solemn and steady, "was Marcus Vance. The same man who betrayed me three years ago."
Clara gasped, pressing a hand to her mouth.
Ethan stood up slowly, taking a file from his pocket and placing it open on the table between them. "I ran your background after you left me on 5th Avenue. I saw the legal records of your father's trial. The fraudulent steel suppliers were registered under an offshore holding company called Apex Horizon—a rogue entity Marcus created while he was my Vice President."
Clara stared at the documents, her eyes scanning the names, dates, and signatures she had memorized years ago during her father's desperate defense.
"Marcus Vance didn't just steal from my company," Ethan continued, stepping closer. "He used your father as a scapegoat to cover up a ninety-million-dollar structural safety fraud scheme across three major city projects. Your father was entirely innocent, Clara. I have the forensic audit trail right here."
Clara dropped into a chair, her chest heaving as tears spilled over her lashes. For five long years, she had carried the crushing weight of her father's disgraced name, enduring the whispers of former colleagues, the door slammed in her face when applying for architectural jobs, and the agonizing guilt that she hadn't been able to save him.
"He was innocent..." she whispered, her voice breaking into a sob. "My dad was innocent..."
Ethan dropped to his knees in front of her chair, not touching her, but close enough that she could feel his presence.
"He was a great man, Clara," Ethan said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "And I am going to prove it to the world. I am reopening the litigation against Vance's remaining assets. I will clear your father's name in every major newspaper in this country. I give you my word."
Clara looked at him through her tears, seeing the raw sincerity in his face. The cold, cynical billionaire from the sidewalk was gone; in his place stood a man who was fighting for his own redemption.
"Why are you doing this for us?" Clara asked, wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand. "You don't owe us anything."
"I owe you everything," Ethan replied quietly. "You saved me from becoming a monster tonight, Clara. Let me help you clear your father's honor."
Before Clara could answer, a loud knock echoed at the suite's entrance door.
Vance walked in quickly, his face unusually grim. He leaned down to whisper into Ethan's ear.
"Sir, we have a problem. Marcus Vance's legal team just filed an emergency injunction in the New York Supreme Court to freeze all historical evidence files related to the Montgomery case. And... someone just leaked a story to the press claiming you are using corporate assets to house a former convict's daughter at the St. Regis."

Ethan’s eyes turned to liquid fire. He stood up, towering over the room.
"Marcus knows," Ethan realized softly. "He knows I found her."
