Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Didn’t Say Her Name

The woman didn’t move for a long moment.

She just sat there in the driver’s seat, staring at Daniel like the word “nothing” didn’t belong in her world.

People like her were not used to that answer. Not from men who had just helped them. Not from men at all.

“You can’t mean that,” she finally said.

Daniel shrugged, already walking backward toward his shop. “I do.”

“You changed my tire in the rain.”

“It’s a tire.”

“That’s not the point.”

Daniel stopped at the garage door. The light above it flickered like it was tired of existing.

“Look,” he said, “if you really want to pay something, pay it forward. That’s it.”

Something shifted in her expression. Not gratitude exactly. Something more complicated. Like confusion wrapped around suspicion.

“You run this place alone?” she asked.

“Most days.”

“And you just… do free work for strangers?”

“If I didn’t,” Daniel said, glancing toward the dark office where Emma’s backpack hung on a hook, “I’d have closed a long time ago anyway.”

That answer seemed to unsettle her more than anything else.

She started the engine.

Before she drove away, she said, “My name is Victoria Hale.”

Daniel gave a small nod. “Drive safe, Ms. Hale.”

She hesitated. “You didn’t even ask who I am.”

“I don’t need to.”

That was the moment she looked at him like he had made a mistake.

Then she drove off into the wet Ohio night.

And Daniel went back inside to fix a broken heater and a broken life that still didn’t care how tired he was.
