Chapter 5 - The Encrypted Ledger

When I returned to my Park Avenue penthouse at 8:00 PM, the atmosphere was subdued.

Sarah and Rachel were standing guard near the elevator, their faces alert. Inside, the lights were dimmed, and the low sound of a children's cartoon echoed from the living room television.

I walked into the guest bedroom.

Lucas was asleep, his small chest rising and falling rhythmically beneath the soft blue duvet. But Liam was awake, sitting cross-legged on the floor in the dark corner beside the bed, his little canvas backpack open between his knees.

I sat down on the carpet beside him, crossing my legs.

"You should be sleeping, Liam," I said gently.

"I can't," Liam whispered. "My head keeps making noise."

"What kind of noise?"

"Numbers," Liam replied, reaching into the backpack and pulling out a small, dog-eared leather notebook with a black cover. "Mommy said I had to keep this safe. She said if I gave it to anyone except you, bad things would happen."

I looked at the notebook. It was wrapped tightly with three thick rubber bands.

"Did Mommy give you this before she took you to the train station?" I asked.

Liam nodded. "She hid it inside the lining of my backpack. She sewed it in with blue thread. I took it out with my fingernails while you were gone."

I reached out my hand hesitantly. "May I see it?"

Liam looked at the notebook, then up at my face. He studied my eyes for a long five seconds before placing the leather book into my palm.

I carefully removed the rubber bands and opened the first page.

The handwriting inside belonged to Emma—neat, elegant, precise architectural script. But it wasn't architectural measurements. It was a dense ledger of bank routing numbers, corporate entity names, and maritime shipping container manifests.

My eyes scanned the first few lines, my financial instincts immediately recognizing the pattern.

Vance Logistics Shipping Division — Container Series 99-B. Destination: Port of Newark / Private Pier 4. Contents: Unmanifested Industrial Equipment / Transfers to Blackwood Holdings LLC. Financial Flow: $120 Million transferred via Zurich Shell Accounts.

This wasn't just a corporate dispute over thirty percent of a family shipping business.

This was a massive, multi-hundred-million-dollar illegal smuggling and money laundering operation executed by Arthur and Richard Vance through Vance Logistics, backed by Blackwood Holdings.

Emma hadn't just run away from her toxic family; she had discovered their illegal network. As an architect hired to redesign the Vance port terminals three years ago, she had accidentally uncovered the hidden vault access and digitized the entire money laundering scheme into this notebook.

She had been blackmailing them to keep herself and her sons safe. But when Arthur Vance decided to sell the company to Blackwood Holdings to wipe the paper trail clean, Emma became an unbearable liability.

"Jason," Marcus's voice sounded quietly behind me.

I stood up, stepping into the hallway while Liam watched me silently from the floor.

"What is it, Marcus?" I asked, looking at the notebook in my hand.

"Our private investigators tracked down the driver who picked Emma up from the Poughkeepsie train station yesterday," Marcus reported, his tone tight. "She didn't run, Jason. She was ambushed."

My chest seized. "Where is she?"

"The driver was paid fifty thousand dollars by a shell company linked to Richard Vance," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low growl. "He drove her to an abandoned industrial warehouse complex near the docks in Bayonne, New Jersey. According to our informant... she was alive when they took her inside twenty-four hours ago."

Alive.

The word crashed through my mind like a thunderbolt, shattering the dark grief that had been building in my heart since morning.

Emma was alive.

"How many men are guarding the facility?" I demanded, my hands clenching into fists so hard my nails cut into my skin.

"At least twelve," Marcus replied. "Armed with automatic weapons. It’s an illegal holding site used by Richard Vance's private security contractors. If we call the FBI or the local police, Richard’s men will get the alert before the sirens reach the turnpike. They’ll execute her and burn the evidence."

I looked down at the small leather notebook in my hand, then through the doorway at Liam and Lucas sleeping safely in their beds.

For five years, I had been a coward. I had chosen safety, wealth, and corporate prestige over the only woman who had ever loved me for who I truly was. I had left her alone to raise our twin sons in the shadows while I sat in my high glass tower.

Not anymore.

"Marcus," I said, my voice as cold and absolute as frozen iron. "Assemble the entire private tactical team. Call the ex-Delta contractors we used in South America last year."

May you like

Marcus’s eyes widened slightly. "Jason... that’s an offensive military action on domestic soil. If this goes wrong, you’ll lose your license, your company, and your freedom."

"I don't care about my company," I spat out, stepping closer to Marcus until my eyes burned into his. "Get the tactical team ready. We leave for Bayonne in thirty minutes."
