Chapter 7 - The Chase in the Snow

The cold wind whipped through Emily’s hair as she carried Lily across the snow-covered stone terrace of the East Wing.
Behind them, the glass doors of their suite were shattered inward with a violent crash.
"There they are!" a voice shouted from inside the room. "Get the woman! Don't let her reach the main house!"
Emily ran along the elevated stone balustrade, her slippers sinking into six inches of fresh snow. Her lungs burned in the freezing air, but the motherly instinct to protect her daughter propelled her forward with incredible speed.
She reached the grand exterior staircase that descended into the estate's formal boxwood maze gardens.
Below, through the falling snow, she saw Alexander Whitmore stepping out onto the main patio holding a heavy steel walking stick, accompanied by two night security guards who had responded to the glass breaking.
"Alexander!" Emily screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice echoing across the courtyard. "Alexander! Help!"
Alexander looked up, his eyes widening in shock as he saw Emily and Lily fleeing across the upper terrace, pursued by two masked men in black tactical gear.
"Security!" Alexander roared with surprising power. "Protect them! Intercept those men!"
The two Whitmore security guards drew their sidearms and charged up the stone steps.
The lead pursuer pulled a silenced pistol, firing two round shots into the snow near the guards' feet to create chaos. The security guards dove behind stone pillars for cover, returning fire.
Taking advantage of the distraction, the second pursuer vaulted over the terrace railing, landing in the deep snow just ten feet behind Emily.
He grabbed the edge of Emily’s robe, jerking her backward into the snowbank. Lily tumbled onto the soft powder, crying out in terror.
"Give me the medal, lady!" the man snarled, his face covered by a black balaclava as he pinned her shoulder down. "Give it to me and nobody gets hurt!"
Emily didn't freeze. She reached into the snow with her free hand, grabbed a heavy frozen stone from the garden border, and struck the man across the side of his tactical helmet with all her force.
The man grunted in pain, loosening his grip.
Emily scrambled to her feet, pulled Lily into her arms, and ran directly toward Alexander, who was advancing up the lower terrace steps swinging his heavy steel cane.
Alexander brought the steel handle down with brutal precision across the pursuer's wrist, disarming him instantly.
"Touch her again," Alexander growled, his eyes blazing with absolute fury, "and you won't survive the night."
Sirens echoed in the distance as three Chicago Police cruisers, alerted by an automated silent alarm triggered at the main gate, crashed through the estate's iron entrance gates, their red and blue lights flashing wildly across the snow-covered gardens.
The two intruders realized the mission was compromised. They turned, vaulted over the perimeter garden wall, and vanished into the dark woods bordering the lake.
Alexander wrapped his heavy wool overcoat around Emily and pulled Lily tight against his side.
"Are you hurt?!" Alexander asked frantically, inspecting them both.
"We're fine," Emily gasped, her chest heaving in the cold air, her hand reaching into her pocket and pulling out the bronze pin, completely undamaged. "We have the medal."
Harrison came running up the steps, holding a towel against his bloodied ear. "Mr. Whitmore! I’m sorry, sir! They cut the gas lines and jammed our local comms—"
"I know who sent them, Harrison," Alexander interrupted, his voice dropping into a register of deathly, absolute calm. "It was Richard."

He looked at Emily, seeing her standing tall in the snow, her eyes fierce and unwavering despite the terror she had just survived.
"He tried to destroy us in the dark," Alexander declared quietly. "Tomorrow morning, we destroy him in the light."
