Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Estate

The front doors of the Santangelo estate didn't just open; they were kicked wide by the cold, biting sea wind that rushed into the foyer like an uninvited guest.
Before Dante could recover his voice, before the guards could draw their weapons, the heavy oak doors banged against the interior walls again, revealing a figure standing on the threshold against the backdrop of flashing red and blue lights.
It wasn't the police. Not yet.
It was Mason, Ethan Cole’s chief of security, flanked by four federal marshals in tactical vests, holding federal warrants that gleamed under the crystal chandelier.
Dante spun around, his hand finally reaching his holster, but a red laser dot flickered instantly against his forehead, right between his eyes.
"Don't even think about it, Mr. Santangelo," Mason said calmly, walking into the foyer with the casual confidence of a man who owned the building. "The perimeter is secured. Every exit is blocked. The Coast Guard cutter has the bay covered, and the U.S. Attorney’s office has already signed the freeze orders on every single bank account tied to Holloway Crest and the Santangelo syndicate."
Elena shrieked, covering her face with her hands as she bolted from her chair toward the side doors, only to find two local state troopers blocking her path with impassive expressions.
"Sit down, Signora," one of the troopers said quietly, guiding her back toward the table with a firm hand on her elbow.
Dante’s chest heaved as he looked around the room, realizing in a single horrifying moment that the empire he had spent a decade building had evaporated in less than an hour. His eyes landed back on Josie, who stood calmly beside the head of the table, resting her hand on the back of Rosaria’s chair.
"You..." Dante hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer disbelief as he pointed a shaking finger at Josie. "You’re just a kitchen maid. How... how the hell did you pull this off?"
Josie tilted her head, a faint, cool smile touching her lips. "I wasn't hired to be a maid, Dante. I was hired to cook. And it turns out, some recipes require a lot more than just salt and pepper. Sometimes you have to clean out the whole pantry."
Mason stepped into the dining room, walking over to Rosaria. He tipped his head respectfully toward the old woman sitting at the head of the table.
"Signora Santangelo," Mason said. "Ethan Cole sends his regards. He said the package you sent through the plate groove arrived safe and sound."
Rosaria nodded slowly, a ghost of a proud smile touching her cracked lips. "Ethan is a smart man. He knows how to keep his promises."
"What package?" Dante snarled, stepping forward. "What the hell does Ethan Cole have to do with this?!"
"Everything," a cool, smooth voice echoed from the foyer.
All heads turned as a tall, impeccably tailored man walked through the double doors, his dark overcoat draped over one arm, his silver-touched hair catching the light. Ethan Cole walked into the dining room with the calm, unhurried stride of a man walking through his own living room.
Dante stared at him, recognition dawning like a physical blow. "Cole... you’re the one who funded the shell company that bought up our commercial shipping lanes last month."
"Among other things," Ethan said smoothly, stopping beside Josie. He glanced down at her, a subtle, genuine warmth softening his hard features. "Are you alright?"
"I’m fine," Josie whispered, her shoulders finally dropping an inch as the unbearable tension of the past two weeks began to drain away. "Just a little tired of scrubbing plates."
"Well," Ethan smiled, turning his attention back to Dante. "You won't have to worry about the dishes anymore, Dante. The federal government is seizing the estate as proceeds of racketeering. Which means as of midnight, this house belongs to the public trust managed by Signora Rosaria."
Dante lunged forward with a furious roar, fists clenched, but Mason was already there. A heavy tactical zip-tie clicked sharply around Dante’s wrists before he could take three steps, slamming him down against the mahogany dining table among the abandoned wine glasses and silver candelabras.
"It’s over, Santangelo," Mason muttered, pressing Dante’s face down against the wood. "Stay down."
As the federal marshals swarmed the room, cuffing Elena and hauling the stunned Boston capos out toward the waiting cruisers in the courtyard, Rosaria reached out and placed her frail, trembling hand over Josie’s.

"You saved my life, child," Rosaria whispered, her milky eyes shining with unshed tears.
"No, Signora," Josie said softly, squeezing the old woman’s hand. "We just finally set the table."
