Chapter 9 - Secrets of the Heart

A year had passed since that faithful Saturday morning at Oakridge Adventure Park. The transition from corporate allies to life partners had been seamless, built on a foundation of mutual respect, shared challenges, and a deep, unshakeable love.

It was a quiet Sunday evening at the city penthouse. The girls were asleep in their adjacent bedrooms, their doors open so they could hear each other’s breathing. Calder and Elena sat out on the private terrace, watching the city lights twinkle below like a field of fallen stars.

Calder turned to Elena, pulling a small, velvet box from his pocket. The metal catch clicked softly in the quiet night air. Inside sat a flawless, seven-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, flanked by two delicate blue sapphires that matched the color of both their daughters’ eyes.

"Elena," Calder said, his voice thick with an emotion he rarely showed the world. "A year ago, I was a man waiting for the clock to run out. I was managing an empire but living in an empty castle. You brought light, intelligence, and a fierce, beautiful life back into this family. You showed me that it’s okay to love again. I don't want another day to pass where you are just my officer or my partner. I want you to be my wife. Will you marry me?"

Elena stared at the ring, her breath catching in her throat. The tears that filled her eyes were entirely born of joy. She looked up into Calder’s face, seeing the vulnerability and the deep devotion of the man who had saved her world.

"Yes, Calder," she whispered, stepping into his embrace as he slid the ring onto her finger. "A thousand times, yes."

Suddenly, a soft cough sounded from the terrace doorway.

They turned to see Callie and Maya standing there, both wearing matching oversized t-shirts, their arms wrapped around each other's shoulders.

"Are you guys getting married?" Callie asked, her blue eyes wide with excitement.

"Does that mean we’re officially sisters now?" Maya added, her face split into a massive, gap-toothed grin.

Calder laughed, a deep, joyful sound that echoed across the city skyline. He knelt down, opening his arms wide. Both girls came running, throwing themselves into a massive family hug with Calder and Elena on the terrace floor.

"Yes, sweeties," Calder whispered, pulling them all close against his heart. "We are officially a family now. Forever."
