Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Legal Warfare

While Emily was trying to heal at home, a different kind of storm was brewing in the legal system. Because Sarah had signed a temporary custody amendment under duress months ago—a document Jason had forged and forced her to sign—the state's family services department was treating the case with aggravating bureaucratic red tape.
I found myself sitting across from a court-appointed social worker named Brenda Vance. She looked at me through thick glasses, reviewing a stack of paperwork.
"Mr. Miller, we understand the severity of the situation," Brenda said, her tone clinical. "But until the criminal investigation into Sarah is completed, the state has to ensure that you are a fit sole guardian. Your ex-wife's defense attorney is arguing that you were negligent for ignoring the warning signs for months."
I slammed my fist on the table, making her coffee cup rattle. "Negligent?! I followed the court order! Every time I tried to intervene, Sarah threatened to take away my visitation rights completely! I called the police for welfare checks, and they told me it was a civil dispute! Do not blame me for what that monster did!"
"Calm down, Mr. Miller," Brenda said coldly. "Anger issues won't help your case. We will be conducting unannounced home visits. Emily will also need to be interviewed by a child psychologist. If she shows signs that your home environment causes her further distress, she may be placed in temporary foster care until Jason is caught."

The word foster care sent a shiver of pure terror down my spine. They wanted to take her away from me again. They wanted to put her back into the system because the system itself had failed to protect her in the first place.
I stood up, leaning over her desk. "You listen to me. My daughter spent weeks locked in a dog cage waiting for me. I am not letting her spend a single night in a stranger's house. You can visit whenever you want. But Emily stays with me."
