Chapter 4 - The Cabin in the Ravine

At 10:00 AM, Detective Miller returned to the estate. His face was worn with exhaustion, his boots covered in frozen mud.
"Mrs. Vance," Miller said, stepping into my private study. "We found where Elise Ward was staying. A secluded cabin four miles north of your boundary line, owned by a shell company registered to Thomas Vance."
"Did you find Elise?" I asked, standing up from my desk.
"No," Miller said, pulling out a plastic evidence bag. "The cabin was completely ransacked. It looks like she packed in a hurry. But we found this hidden inside a vent in the kitchen floor."
Inside the evidence bag was a black USB flash drive and a thick leather-bound notebook.
"We haven't analyzed the drive yet," Miller said. "Our tech team is working on it at the station. But the notebook... Mrs. Vance, you need to read this."
I opened the notebook. The handwriting was precise, neat, and filled with dates stretching back three years.
Elise Ward hadn't just been Grant's mistress. She had been his senior accountant at the firm before she became pregnant.
As I flipped through the pages, the true horror of Grant's scheme emerged.
Grant hadn't just cheated on me. He had been systematically embezzling money from my family’s trust fund—over twelve million dollars over four years—and using Elise’s accounting credentials to wire the money into offshore accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.
When Elise became pregnant with the twins, she wanted to stop. She tried to end the affair and go to the police. But Grant had trapped her—threatening to frame her for the embezzlement using her forged signatures if she ever spoke a word.
The last entry in the notebook was dated yesterday:
"Grant came to the cabin tonight. He brought a bottle of wine and told me we were all moving to Costa Rica next week. But I saw the mechanical shears in his briefcase. He thinks I'm stupid. He thinks I don't know he bought a life insurance policy on me three months ago. I’m taking the babies and running to Elena’s gatehouse tonight. Elena is the only one with enough power to stop him. If I don't survive the night, God please let Elena protect my children."
Tears finally filled my eyes, burning hot against my cheeks.
Elise hadn't been an evil home-wrecker trying to steal my husband. She had been a terrified mother, trapped in a cage built by a sociopath, using her final desperate breath to send her babies to the only person who could save them.
"She knew I would protect them," I whispered, holding the notebook against my chest.
"Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said quietly. "Thomas Vance just posted Grant’s bail at the county jail using a private cashier's check. They are both free."
May you like
I wiped my tears away, standing tall and straight. The pain in my heart hardened into an impenetrable shield of steel.
"Let them come," I said coldly. "I'm ready for them."
