Chapter 10 - The Map in the Blue Bible

The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, turning the water into a vast sheet of gold and deep, warm copper.

We sat on the wooden deck of our new home in Sitges, a white stone villa that sat on the cliffs above the sea, its circular tower looking out toward the old iron lighthouse that guarded the entrance to the fishing harbor. The air was warm, smelling of salt, rosemary, and the sweet pine trees that lined the path to the beach.

Noah and Lily—who had come to visit us from Spain with their mother, Elena, during the spring break—were down on the sand with Lauren, their laughter carrying through the warm evening air as they chased a small orange cat through the dunes.

I sat in the wicker chair by the table, the blue Bible resting open in my lap.

The Family Registry page had been updated. In the section marked Marriages, in a fresh, dark blue ink, were the words:

Julian Robert Vance and Mary Grace Fitzgerald. June 15, 2026.

Mary sat beside me, her hand resting on my knee, her fingers tracing the gold-leaf lettering on the cover of the book.

"Do you believe in God now, Julian?" she asked softly, her eyes fixed on the lighthouse beam as it began its first slow, golden rotation over the water.

I looked down at the children on the sand, then at the woman beside me whose love had survived ten years of my absence, and finally at the small, worn photograph that still sat inside the front cover of the Bible.

"I’m not sure about the theology, Mary," I said, my voice rich, full, and completely at peace. "But I believe in the light. I believe that there’s something that holds the bridge together when the load gets too heavy. And I believe that some maps are built to bring you back, no matter how far you run."

May you like

Mary smiled, her head resting against my shoulder as the golden light of the lighthouse washed over the deck, turning the stone, the water, and the two of us into a single, clean geometry that no winter would ever be cold enough to break.

We sat together in the quiet night, the builders of a new life, watching the ship of our family move out into the wide, beautiful freedom of the open sea.
