Chapter 5 - The Flight into the Night

The cold rain hit my face like a shower of needles as I sprinted across the dark lawn toward where my rental car was parked. Behind me, the back door of the house flew open with a violent crash.
“AMELIA! STOP RIGHT THERE!” Ross roared, his voice thick with fury and panic.
I didn't look back. I reached my car, jerked the driver’s side door open, dived inside, and slammed it shut, locking the doors automatically just as Ross’s silhouette burst out of the backyard hedge.
He lunged toward the car, grabbing the door handle and shaking it violently, his face distorted with rage under the flickering streetlight.
“Open the door, you crazy bitch!” he screamed, pounding his fist against the driver’s side window.
I ignored him, shoved the key into the ignition, and cranked the engine. The motor roared to life. I threw the car into reverse, tires spinning wildly on the wet grass before catching traction on the asphalt, forcing Ross to leap backward out of the way as I accelerated down the dark street.
In the rearview mirror, I watched him shrink into the distance, standing in the middle of the road in his pajamas, shaking his fist in impotent fury.
I drove straight to Maya’s office building—or rather, to the secure underground parking garage of the downtown law firm where my cousin Maya worked as a senior partner in corporate and family litigation. Maya had answered my frantic midnight call earlier, telling me to meet her secure office drop-box if I ever managed to retrieve physical documentation.
Twenty minutes later, sitting in the brightly lit, secure conference room of Maya’s firm, I emptied the contents of my coat onto the polished mahogany table.
The portable hard drive.
The forged property deeds.
The intercepted letters from Casey.
Maya stood beside me, wearing a crisp blazer over her pajamas, scrolling through the files she had immediately plugged into her secure laptop workstation. Her eyes widened as she read the contents of the hard drive.
“Em... holy hell,” Maya whispered, looking up at me in disbelief. “This isn't just a messy divorce or a custody dispute. This is systemic, premeditated financial fraud and identity theft crossing state and federal jurisdictions.”
“Can we use it?” I asked, my voice tight with exhaustion.
“Use it?” Maya smiled grimly, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she encrypted backup copies to a secure server. “This is an atomic bomb. Between the forged military estate documents, the spoofed text messaging logs, and the evidence of unlawful asset transfer, Ross and Gwendolyn aren't just going to lose custody of Casey—they’re looking at serious federal penitentiary time.”
She paused, looking at me with deep concern in her eyes. “What about Casey right now? She’s with Aunt Miriam, right?”
“Yes. Miriam’s place is secure, but Ross and Gwendolyn have already manipulated local child-protection services with those fake police reports.”
“Not anymore,” Maya said firmly, standing up and grabbing her briefcase. “Morning is in three hours. At 8:00 a.m. sharp, we aren't filing motions in family court. We are walking straight into the District Attorney’s office with federal marshals and local detectives.”

She reached out and placed a warm hand on my shoulder.
“You’re getting your daughter back, Em. And this time, nobody is going to take her away.”
