Chapter 8 - The Ghost from the Past

Adrian reached the front foyer just as Marcus Bell pushed open the heavy oak door, looking grim and alert.

"Boss," Marcus said immediately. "We have an unexpected visitor at the front gate perimeter. They bypassed the standard guest protocols using an old security clearance override code."

"Whose code?" Adrian asked, his eyes narrowing.

"A code that hasn’t been active in over three years," Marcus replied, handing Adrian a small encrypted tablet. "Belonging to Senator Richard Hale."

Adrian stared at the name. Richard Hale—Vanessa’s uncle, the powerful state senator who had been laughing with her at the engagement party before abruptly cutting ties the moment the scandal broke.

"He thinks he can use political immunity to walk onto private property uninvited?" Adrian asked coldly.

"He’s alone in the car, and he’s unarmed," Marcus said. "He’s asking for a brief, private conversation. He claims it concerns the federal trial and assets that directly impact Mercer Ridge."

Adrian walked out onto the front porch, standing at the top of the stone steps as the black sedan rolled to a slow halt in the courtyard. The engine cut off, and the driver’s side door opened.

Senator Richard Hale stepped out. The powerful, impeccably tailored politician looked older, gaunter, and profoundly exhausted. The political fallout from his niece’s arrest had cost him his committee chairmanships and severely damaged his upcoming reelection campaign. He walked slowly toward the steps, his hands visible and empty.

"Adrian," Richard said, his voice lacking its usual booming, theatrical resonance. "Thank you for seeing me."

"You have two minutes before my security team escorts you off this property, Senator," Adrian said, not moving an inch from the top of the steps. "You share blood with a criminal who tried to poison me. You have no business here."

Richard stopped halfway up the steps, holding up a hand defensively. "I know. And I’m not here to defend Vanessa. What she did was monstrous, and I cut all ties with her the moment the federal agents raided her penthouse. I came here because of what she left behind in her private estate downtown—items the federal investigators missed during the initial sweep."

Adrian’s expression didn't change. "If the FBI missed something, hand it over to federal prosecutors. Don't bring it to my doorstep."

"I can't do that," Richard said, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "Because it doesn't just implicate Vanessa. It implicates a network of venture capitalists and corrupt state officials who helped her leverage those illegal cryptocurrency schemes—people who are currently trying to frame me to cover their own tracks."

Richard reached into the inside pocket of his coat.

Marcus instantly tensed, his hand hovering over his holster. "Stop right there. Keep your hands where I can see them."

Richard froze, slowly pulling out a thick, leather-bound journal instead of a weapon, holding it out flat on his palms.

"It’s a ledger," Richard said. "Every illegal wire transfer, every offshore bribe, every pharmaceutical procurement order signed by Vanessa over the last eighteen months. If you hand this over to your legal team, it will completely dismantle the entire syndicate of white-collar criminals who backed her ambitions."

Adrian stared down at the leather-bound book. He took a slow step down the stairs, reached out, and took the ledger from the senator’s hands.

He flipped it open. The handwriting was unmistakably Vanessa’s—meticulous, cold, and damning.

"Why are you giving me this?" Adrian asked, looking up into the senator’s fearful eyes. "If this exposes your political associates, why burn them?" Because they’re already trying to burn me," Richard answered bitterly. "They think I knew about the poisoning. I didn't. I knew she was ambitious, but I never knew she was a killer. I want out, Adrian. I want my life back."

Adrian closed the ledger firmly. He looked back at Marcus. "Take the ledger. Have our forensic accountants verify every page within the hour." Then he looked back at the senator. "You gave us the evidence, Richard. Now get off my property. If I ever see your face near Lake Geneva again, no amount of political immunity will save you."

May you like

Richard nodded grimly, turned around without another word, got back into his sedan, and drove away down the winding country road.

Adrian stood on the porch, holding the final piece of the puzzle. The storm was finally clearing for good.
