Chapter 7 - The Autumn at Greenwich

Six months later.
The dark, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the Sterling estate in Greenwich for years had completely vanished, replaced by the yellow light of late autumn and the sound of laughter echoing through the tall oak trees.
In the rear gardens, where manicured hedges had once been kept in sterile, military precision, a massive wooden playground had been constructed—complete with three slides, a rope bridge, and two swings.
Noah was soaring high into the air, his small legs kicking toward the blue sky.
"Higher, Mommy! Push me higher!" he shouted, his face red with joy, his dark hair messy in the afternoon breeze.
Elena stood behind the swing, giving him a gentle push every time he came back to her. She wore a comfortable cream-colored knit sweater, jeans, and soft leather boots. Her face was full, healthy, and radiant with a peace she had never known in her thirty years of life.
On the patio fifty yards away, Julian sat at a rustic wooden table, a laptop open before him, reviewing the final settlement papers for the Vance family bankruptcy liquidation.
All of Victoria’s assets—including her townhome, her private art collection, and her trust shares—had been seized by the court to establish an irrevocable restitution fund for victims of illegal adoption schemes across North America, managed directly by Elena’s new foundation.
Victoria Vance was currently serving an eight-year sentence at a federal facility in Danbury, while her mother, Lady Eleanor, had been placed under house arrest due to her failing health.
Julian closed the laptop and walked down the grass toward the swings.
He wrapped his arms around Elena from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as they watched Noah swing.
"The court officially signed the amended birth certificate this morning," Julian murmured, his breath warm against her ear. "It arrived by courier an hour ago."
Elena stopped the swing gently, bringing Noah to a halt. The boy hopped off the rubber seat and immediately took off running toward the golden retriever puppy Julian had brought home three weeks ago.
"What does it say?" Elena asked, turning her head to look at Julian.
Julian pulled a thick, official parchment from his coat pocket and handed it to her.
At the top, in crisp black typography, were the words: STATE OF NEW YORK — CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH.
Under Child's Full Name: Noah Sterling-Vance. Under Father's Name: Julian Arthur Sterling. Under Mother's Name: Elena Marie Vance.
Elena ran her fingers over the raised gold seal of the state of New York. Her eyes filled with tears, but they were no longer the bitter, cold tears of the St. Regis ballroom or the Montreux clinic. They were tears of complete, unshakeable restoration.

"It’s real," she whispered. "He’s really mine."
"He was always yours, Elena," Julian said, turning her in his arms so he could look into her eyes. "From the very first second."
