Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Fortress

Three weeks passed, and the private estate of Dominic Vance became both Mara’s paradise and her prison. The estate, known as the Walled Garden, sat on fifty acres of heavily wooded land along the shores of Lake Michigan. It was protected by high concrete walls topped with razor wire, thermal cameras, and a small army of men in dark suits who carried submachine guns beneath their jackets with casual familiarity.
Mara’s physical recovery was nothing short of miraculous, fueled by her own medical knowledge and the round-the-clock attention of Dominic’s private physician, Dr. Aris. She was now able to sit up in a plush armchair on the balcony, watching the autumn leaves fall into the grey lake. She wore elegant, comfortable silk robes provided by the household staff, her old rags having been burned the day she arrived.
Yet, the luxury couldn't erase the deep tension that vibrated through the house. Dominic was rarely home during the day, and when he returned at night, the smell of cigar smoke and expensive scotch followed him into the study, where low, angry murmurs with his captains lasted until dawn.
One afternoon, while Elena was resting, Mara decided to walk down the grand spiral staircase. Her legs were still weak, her breath shallow, but she needed to move. She found herself in the central conservatory, a massive glass dome filled with exotic orchids and tropical ferns. Sitting at a marble table in the center was a woman in her late forties, dressed in a sharp white business suit, methodically cleaning a compact black pistol.
The woman didn't look up when Mara entered. "You shouldn't be out of bed, Nurse Ellis. Dr. Aris said your stitches in the lateral oblique are still fragile."
Mara stopped, her nursing instincts kicking in as she noted the woman’s flawless posture and the total lack of hesitation in her hands. "Who are you?"
"My name is Valeria," the woman said, slotting the magazine into the pistol with a sharp, metallic click. "I am Dominic’s legal counsel, his intelligence coordinator, and the person who ensures that the bodies of his enemies never float to the surface of the Chicago River. I am also the person who investigated your past."
Valeria stood up, walking over to Mara with a cool, assessing gaze. "You were a top-tier trauma nurse, Mara. You saved gang members, politicians, and cops alike without bias. But the streets change a person. They make you soft, or they make you vicious. Dominic thinks you are a saint because you saved his daughter. I think you are a wild card who brought the Moretti family’s full attention to this house."
"I didn't ask for any of this," Mara said, her voice steady despite the intimidating presence of the woman. "I didn't know who Dominic Vance was. I just saw a child about to be murdered."
Valeria stared at her for a long moment, the hardness in her expression cracking just a fraction. "That child is the only pure thing left in this family. Her mother died of leukemia four years ago. Dominic has spent twenty million dollars trying to find a matching bone marrow donor and a specialist who can repair her pulmonary fibrosis. If anything happens to Elena, Dominic will burn this city to the ground, and everyone in it will burn with him."
Before Mara could reply, a sudden, loud alarm echoed through the conservatory. A red light began to flash rhythmically against the glass dome.
Valeria moved with blinding speed, grabbing Mara by the arm and dragging her behind a thick concrete planter filled with ferns. "Intrusion at the north gate," Valeria muttered, pulling a compact radio from her blazer. "Alpha team, report."
The radio crackled with the sound of rapid gunfire and static. "We’ve got three delivery vans breaching the perimeter! They’re wearing tactical gear! It’s Moretti’s cleanup crew—" The transmission cut off with a wet, choking sound.
"They found us," Mara whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs as the phantom pain of her six bullet wounds flared up in response to the stress.

"They didn't find us," Valeria said, her eyes flashing with a cold, predatory light as she checked her weapon. "Dominic leaked our location. He wanted them to come here. He wanted them in the open."
The glass dome above them suddenly shattered into thousands of glittering shards as a sniper bullet tore through the air, embedding itself in the marble table where Valeria had been sitting moments before. The war for the Vance empire had arrived at the front door.
