Chapter 8 - The Assault on Saratoga

The Moretti stronghold was a fortified horse ranch spread across three hundred acres in Saratoga Springs, New York.

By 3:00 a.m. the following night, thirty black SUVs carrying over one hundred of Lorenzo Caruso’s most loyal enforcers had surrounded the perimeter of the vast estate.

Sarah sat in the command vehicle—a heavy, bulletproof mobile communications van stationed two miles down a dark country road.

She was dressed in comfortable clothes, an ice pack pressed against her shoulder, wearing a headset that allowed her to hear every radio transmission from Enzo’s assault team.

Beside her sat Dr. Zhang and little Leo, who refused to leave Sarah’s side while his father was in the field.

"Sarah?" Leo whispered, clutching his repaired robot in his lap. "Is Daddy going to hurt the bad men?"

Sarah looked down at the boy, wrapping her good arm around his small shoulders. "Your daddy is making sure nobody ever threatens you again, Leo."

Over the radio, Enzo’s voice cut through the static, cold and absolute: "Alpha team in position. Beta team breach the east gate. No survivors for anyone wearing the serpent."

What followed over the audio feed was thirty minutes of absolute, terrifying war.

The sound of heavy breaching charges detonated across the night sky, followed by relentless streams of automatic gunfire. The Moretti family, caught entirely off guard by the speed and precision of Enzo’s intelligence, were cut down in their own courtyard.

"Breaching the main house!" Marco’s voice echoed over the comms. "We have heavy resistance on the second floor!"

"Suppress and advance!" Enzo ordered. "I want Dominic alive!"

Sarah listened, her pulse racing, her hand gripping the edge of the aluminum desk inside the van. She heard the sound of wood splintering, heavy boots kicking down doors, and the unmistakable sound of Dominic Moretti screaming obscenities in dialect.

"It’s over, Dominic!" Enzo’s voice rang out clearly over the open mic. "Your captains are dead. Your money in Switzerland is gone. Victor Rossi's notebook gave me everything."

A wet, wheezing cough came through the speaker—Dominic Moretti’s dying voice. "You... you think you won, Caruso? You think killing me saves your boy?"

"I don't think, Dominic," Enzo replied coldly. "I know."

A single, definitive gunshot echoed over the radio feed.

Silence fell across the line for five agonizing seconds.

Then Enzo’s voice came back on: "Target neutralized. The Moretti family is no more. Secure the perimeter and bring up the transport."

Leo let out a little sigh of relief, leaning his head against Sarah’s arm. "Daddy won."

Tears pricked Sarah’s eyes—not of fear, but of profound, overwhelming exhaustion. The war that had spilled into her life on a Tuesday night at the Halston Hotel was finally over.

Ten minutes later, the rear doors of the command van swung open.

Lorenzo Caruso stood in the moonlight. His coat was dusted with plaster and smoke, his hands stained with carbon residue, but his face was completely calm.

He stepped into the van, dropped his weapons onto the storage bench, and knelt down before his son.

Leo threw his arms around his father’s neck. "Daddy!"

Enzo held his son tight, burying his face in the boy's neck, breathing in his scent—the primal relief of a father who had successfully protected his child from the dark.

Then, Enzo looked up at Sarah.

He stood up, walked over to where she sat, and did something that stunned everyone in the van—including Marco and Dr. Zhang.

Lorenzo Caruso, the undisputed king of the New York underworld, bowed his head deeply to a twenty-four-year-old hotel server.

"Thank you, Sarah," Enzo said softly. "You gave me my son. You gave me my victory. My family owes you a debt that can never be fully repaid."
