Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

The peace they had built over the autumn months was suddenly threatened on a Tuesday afternoon in early November.
Adrian was sitting at his desk in the home office, reviewing legal documents for the foundation, when his encrypted satellite phone rang. It was Arthur Pendelton, his family attorney.
"Adrian," Pendelton said, his tone unusually grave. "We have a problem. Julian Croft."
Adrian’s grip on the phone tightened. "What about him? I bought out his shares two months ago. He’s out of the company."
"He’s out of Vance Capital, yes," Pendelton replied. "But he’s bitter. He’s been digging into Clara’s history during those five years she lived in New York before you found her. He filed a petition with the New York Department of Child and Family Services this morning."
Adrian stood up slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs. "On what grounds?"
"Neglect. He’s using her past medical records—her hospital admissions for pulmonary failure, her lack of steady employment, the condition of the apartment on 138th Street—to claim that she was an unfit mother and that Khloe was raised in an unsafe environment. He’s trying to trigger a state investigation that would force a custody review."
"Why?" Adrian’s voice was dangerously low. "Why would he do that?"
"To hurt you," Pendelton said simply. "He knows he can't beat you in the market anymore. He knows your reputation is tied to this transformation. If he creates a public scandal about your daughter being raised in extreme poverty while you were a billionaire, it destroys the foundation’s credibility and forces a massive public inquiry into your personal life."
"Where is the investigator now?" Adrian demanded.
"They're on their way to your house in upstate. An agent named Sarah Vance—no relation—and a court officer. They'll be there in thirty minutes."
Adrian hung up the phone. His first impulse was panic—the old, corporate panic that made him want to call twenty lawyers, issue injunctions, and crush Croft under a mountain of litigation.
He stepped out of his office and went into the living room. Clara was sitting on the floor with Khloe, helping her build a massive castle out of wooden blocks. The sunlight streamed through the tall windows, painting the room in soft hues of amber and gold.
He couldn't let the corporate war pollute this space. He couldn't let Croft’s malice touch this room.
"Clara," Adrian said, stepping down into the living room. "We have company coming."
Clara looked up, sensing the shift in his voice immediately. "Who?"
"Child Protective Services," Adrian said calmly, kneeling beside her so he was at eye level. "Julian Croft filed a report regarding your time in Harlem."
Clara turned pale, her hand instinctively reaching out to cover Khloe’s wooden castle. "No... no, Adrian, they can't take her! I did everything I could! I missed meals so she could eat! I worked three jobs until my lungs gave out!"
"Listen to me," Adrian said firmly, taking both of her shaking hands in his. "Look at me, Clara."
She met his gaze, her eyes wide with terror.
"Nobody is taking Khloe," Adrian said with an absolute certainty that thrilled through the room. "Not Croft, not the state, not anyone. We aren't going to hide. We aren't going to send lawyers to block them at the gate. We are going to open the door, welcome them in, and let them see the truth."
May you like
"The truth?" Clara whispered.
"The truth," Adrian said, turning to look at Khloe, who was watching them with calm, curious eyes. "That this child is loved, protected, and home."
